Open Post: Hosted By Billie Eilish’s Unenthusiastic Response To Jennifer Lopez’s Appearance At The MTV VMAs

The only thing Jennifer Lopez loves more than to bask in the glory of dozens of cameras while standing next to Ben Affleck is to invite people to come together as a collective group and suggest we all get loud. Well, if you happened to catch Billie Eilish in the audience at the 2021 MTV VMAs last night, you might assume that Billie isn’t familiar with JLo’s enthusiasm for getting loud, because when JLo came out to present an award, Billie’s hands could not have been less active and her mouth more silent. Oooh, where’s that shady reality show rattlesnake noise when you need it.

JLo was there to present the award for Song of the Year, which went to Olivia Rodrigo for drivers license. JLo’s appearance was technically a bit of a surprise, so the crowd went wild when she stepped on the stage. Except for Billie, who got a little bit of a villain edit last night when the camera cut to her. Billie’s response began with some mild, low-energy applause-style hand movement, which abruptly evolved into what looked like Billie’s attempt at checking to make sure her manicure was still there. Yep, all 10 nails, still very glossy. And it’s appropriate that JLo was presenting the Song of the Year award to “Drivers License,” because Billie had a look about her that said, “Soooo…is there anyone at this DMV able who can renew my license, or is everyone still at lunch?”

She might not know her, but she’s definitely met her!

The New York Post took Billie’s reaction as intentional, although they didn’t offer up a suggestion for why it might have been. And the response on Twitter was mixed, with some people calling Billie “rude” and “classless” while others suggested Billie’s response was due to Billie having “taste.” To be fair to Billie, she might just not be a fan. After all, Jennifer Lopez released “Let’s Get Loud” a whole two years before Billie was born. Or maybe Billie was too stunned to clap and cheer for JLo after seeing her outfit:

Full disclosure, I too would be too stunned to applaud. I’d be busy marveling at her ability to harness time travel, which is clearly the explanation for why she’s dressed as a stripper from the Roman Empire.
