The Trailer For “The Matrix Resurrections” Is Here

The fourth Matrix movie finished filming last year and ever since then I’m sure the nerds were waiting with bated breath. The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled to be released simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max on December 22. And today, the trailer finally dropped. CUTE WARNING AHEAD: The trailer features a rubber ducky on Keanu Reeves‘ head.

The first The Matrix movie came out in 1999 and its two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions came out in 2003. The Hollywood Reporter says original writer, Lana Wachowski, is back as director and co-writer (along with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon). Her sister, Lilly Wachowski, who worked on the originals, did not return for the fourth movie. Lilly explained she was tired from her transition and working on other projects. Also, Lilly didn’t feel like working on something from her past as she looked ahead to create newer material. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are back, and joining them are Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, and Neil Patrick Harris as Neo’s therapist. Laurence Fishburne was not asked to return as Morpheus, but it looks like Yahya is playing a young Morpheus or some kind of version of Morpheus.

At the end of the third movie, Neo rebooted the Matrix and deleted the villainous Agent Smith, but died along with his love, Trinity. The newest iteration comes over 17 years later and Neo/Thomas is somehow back in the Matrix and living on a steady regimen of blue pills. Neo/Thomas meets Trinity who seems to have also have lost her memory but knows there’s a connection between them. Neo then takes the red pill and chaos and gun-fighting ensues, along with tons of Alice In Wonderland references. Here’s the trailer, which makes excellent use of Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit.

Within one hour of the trailer making its debut, it had already racked up 1 million views. Of course, eagle-eyed fans have already been spotting easter eggs hidden in the trailer, and Screen Rant has compiled a list of a few of them.

And as I mentioned up top, my favorite part of the trailer has to be this little moment:

Oh, to be that rubber ducky on Keanu’s head. A new icon has been born! And I’m sure that Neo didn’t even wait until he stunk before he took this bath.
