Kate Winslet Says There May Be A Second Season Of “Mare Of Easttown”

Kate Winslet is nominated for an Emmy for her lead role in Mare of Easttown, so she sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Kate proceeded to reveal the names of the four closeted actors she knows that Brad Ingelsby, the show’s creator, has “some very cool ideas” for a potential second season, which has been hinted at before. Initially, HBO was promoting Mare of Easttown as a one-off limited series, and that’s the Emmy category all 16 of its nominations are in. But it looks like they’ll pull a Big Little Lies and try to milk some more cashola outta the story. Hopefully, that shit’s better than Big Little Lies’ sophomore season. Not even Meryl Streep’s false teeth could save that mess.

Back in June HBO’s programming chief said there were “no conversations” about a second season, but now Kate is saying it’s a very real possibility (via IndieWire):

“At the end of shooting we were like, ‘Holy hell we can never do that again. If HBO brings up the idea of a Season 2, we all just have to say absolutely not. There’s just no way we could possibly do it. And then there was talk, like, could there be? Especially when the show was getting such good responses… Creatively, Brad has shared some very cool ideas. We will see what happens. I also have to figure out if I can do it. Can I go through it again? It did cost me a lot emotionally to be her, and I have to figure out if I can summon it all up again and do it again.”

Kate added that she was surprised about the strong reaction to how Mare looked. She says the character was purposely styled as a “hot mess” busy mom:

“People have been enraptured about how shitty we made Mare look,” Winslet said. “That was very important to us creatively. We wanted to keep it real, and we were strict about it… Find the t-shirt that has a line that hits at the hip at the widest part. Don’t wear a bra, she just got up out of bed. Why would she have a bra on?

Perhaps because of COVID and how much of a struggle that has been for people globally, there was something about how Mare looks that seemed to make people validated in a way. That was very, very surprising. I did not think people would be so responsive and I’m grateful in a way that we would able to do that.”

I agree with Kate’s whole “validating” COVID theory. It was really refreshing to see a gorgeous movie star without all the makeup and styling. She looked like common trash, just like you and I! It also gave us uggos the idea that the reverse could be true; I could look as good as Kate if I just had the celebrity resources! And lost 50 pounds. And got hair extensions. And lip fillers. And Botoxed the bitch line between my eyes. And finally fixed my nose. And tits. And that one weird mole.
