Kate Winslet Says She Knows “At Least” Four Gay Actors Who Are Afraid Of Coming Out

Kate Winslet stars in the sad-repressed-historical-lesbian film Ammonite, so she talked about sexuality and homophobia in the biz for a recent interview with The Sunday Times. Kate says she can think of “at least four actors” hiding their sexuality because they’re scared of not getting cast in straight roles.

She says, via Page Six:

“I can think of at least four actors absolutely hiding their sexuality,” the actress, 45, told the Sunday Times. “It’s painful. Because they fear being found out. And that’s what they say. ‘I don’t want to be found out.’”

“I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know — some well-known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles,” she said, calling the notion “f–ked up.”

And think of all the actors who aren’t sharing their sexuality with an A-lister like Kate. She says some agents tell their clients not to “publicize” their sexuality because it could hurt their careers:

“It’s bad news. Hollywood has to drop that dated crap of, ‘Can he play straight because, apparently, he’s gay?’” she told the newspaper, noting that the stigma applies to “men more than anything.”

“That should be almost illegal. You would not believe how widespread it is. And it can’t just be distilled to the question about gay actors playing gay parts. Because actors, in some cases, are choosing not to come out for personal reasons. And it’s nobody’s business. Perhaps privacy. Perhaps conditioning and shame.”

Then Kate talked about how she, a straight woman, played the role of a lesbian for Ammonite:

“We could have had a conversation about how I feel about playing a lesbian and possibly taking that role from somebody,” she said. “But I’m done with not being honest about what my real opinions are, and I know the part was never offered to anybody else. In taking this part I had an opportunity to bring an LGBTQ story into living rooms.”

The idea that only queer actors should be play queer characters has been discussed a lot lately. Kristen Stewart’s opinion is, “um, it’s a gray area”, Wentworth Miller says he’s refusing to play straight anymore, and actors like Richard E. Grant and Darren Criss, both known for playing gay, have said they won’t be taking roles from LGBTQ actors again.

Kate says she hopes the film will help usher other LGBTQ+ films into the mainstream, and that she wants people in the industry to take a stand. Thank God Kate is saying this shit after admitting she was wrong to work with Woody Allen. If this was before I’d be getting ready to slap her forehead with a “HYPOCRITE” sticker. And I really don’t wanna do that to Rose DeWitt-Bukater-Dawson. Also, I only have so many stickers. They’re expensive.
