A “Face/Off” Sequel Is In The Works

lt’s been nearly 24 years since Nicolas Cage and John Travolta starred in the movie that cemented their legacies in the WTF Did I Just Watch Hall of Fame. And while nobody asked for Hollywood to attempt to improve upon perfection (I said what I said and I stand by it), Hollywood is still going to go ahead and give us a sequel to Face/Off in the near future.

Face/Off is s full-blown bonkers action film from 1997 that was directed by John Woo and starred Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as a terrorist and an FBI agent who successfully survive a secret dual face transplant surgery in an attempt to find the location of a hidden bomb. It was filmed on a budget of $80 million and went on to make nearly $250 million, and it likely would have been in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 1997 had, you know, Titanic not been released that year.

Deadline initially reported that Paramount was planning a reboot or a re-imagining of Face/Off. There were rumors two years ago that Paramount was planning to reboot the film. But now Deadline is saying that it will be a sequel. Except no one from the original is coming back, and the roles will likely be re-cast.

Director Adam Wingard’s plans for Face/Off: he is approaching the film as a sequel to the original hit film, as opposed to a remake as I had been told when I broke the story. But I believe the leads will be re-cast.

Adam Wingard recently directed Godzilla Vs. Kong, so he clearly knows a thing or two about the genre. The genre being: two alpha types squaring off for a big-budget third-act good-vs-evil battle. There’s no word on a script for this Face/Off sequel, so all we have to go off of right now is that two unnamed actors that have yet to be cast will possibly be switching faces. Kris Jenner just showed up at Khloé Kardashian’s house with a copy of the trades, telling her that this is the perfect role for her.

If Paramount really wants to bill this as a sequel and not a reboot, then they’ve got to figure out how they’ll update all the face-stroking that happens in the source material. There’s no way you can have nearly this much face-touching in a post-COVID-19 world:
