Matthew McConaughey Didn’t Talk To His Mom For Eight Years Because She Kept Talking To The Media About Him
Moms. The only thing they love more than talking to their kids is talking about their kids. And why should moms of celebrities be any different? Like a bunch of other stars right now, Matthew McConaughey just released his new memoir, entitled Greenlights, and he went on Howard Stern to plug, plug, plug. Soon the topic turned to his 88-year-old mother Kay McConaughey. No, Matthew didn’t get into his dad dying while sexing his mom (although, that’s in the book). But Matthew did get into how his mom’s blabbermouth messed up his relationship with her. Apparently, when Matthew first got famous in the nineties, Kay didn’t deal with it very well and leaked all his private information to the press. Matthew says she became “a different person”, and things got so bad that they were estranged for eight years. Sad face emoji.
Matthew told Howard Stern, via Buzzfeed:
“I was calling my mom at that time after I’d gotten famous, needing to talk to my mom,” he said, adding that his life felt “unbalanced” in the wake of his newfound fame. “And my mom was not the only one on the phone. The woman that was on the phone was a fan. Of my fame.”
“I would have conversations and then all of a sudden — whoop — what we’d talk about would end up in the paper three days later,” he said. “I was like, ‘Mom, that was between us.’”
Damn, that’s some Megan Markle’s pot-stirring papa shit right there.
Things reached a boiling point when a friend called Matthew one night and told him to turn on the 90s tabloid news show Hard Copy. He did, and discovered Kay giving a televised tour of his childhood home:
“There’s Mom, giving someone a tour through the house, [saying] ‘Here’s where I caught him with so-and-so in bed. Here’s where I saw him in the shower, you know what he was doing in there, ha ha ha.'”
“And I call her up, and I go, ‘Mom, what did you do?’ And she goes, ‘What are you talking about?'”
Though she initially tried to play dumb about the Hard Copy appearance, she eventually admitted to Matthew why she did it: “I didn’t think you’d find out,” she told him.
Matthew says Kay’s love of the spotlight caused them to have a very “strenuous” relationship for eight years. But, luckily, after setting up some boundaries, everything’s alright, alright, alriiight (I had to, I’m sorry). And once Matthew’s career stabilized, he “let go of the reins” and said, “Go get it, Mom. Whatever you want. There’s the camera.”
Here’s the mom portion of Matthew’s Howard Stern interview:
And here’s a rein-less Kay doing what she does best; dishing about her handsome son:
