Dolly Parton Made Stephen Colbert Cry By Singing

Dolly Parton is a QUEEN. And I know that coronavirus has hit all industries, but she better not reneg on her promise of a wig collection! Don’t think we’ve forgotten! But when she was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert she wasn’t there to talk wigs, unfortunately. She has a new book out and because Dolly is such an iconic country legend, her conversation inevitably led to a song, and that song inevitably led to Stephen crying on TV.

Rolling Stone said Dolly was on The Late Show last night to talk about her book Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. Stephen asked Dolly about singing with her mother and the songs her mom taught her. Dolly said a lot of the songs were “plum pitiful,” sad-ass songs like one her mom would sing acapella to her, Bury Me Beneath The Willow, which was about a girl whose fella leaves her at the altar to marry another woman, so she kills herself. See? Women need songs like WAP considering the material they’ve been handed up to this point!

When Dolly started singing, Stephen couldn’t keep it together and cried a little, so Dolly sang one more verse after she noticed his crying and then stopped.

“Aw, you’re crying?… So I better hush before you cry yourself to death and you can’t finish the show!”

Stephen laughed it off and dabbed his eyes with tissue, explaining that he was under a lot of stress like most Americans these days. Dolly agreed that crying “cleanses your soul,” and that “water’s good to wash it out. It’s what tears are for, I think.” Which is why I do my crying in the shower. Double-duty!

She also talked about her new Christmas album, Holly Dolly Christmas, featuring Miley CyrusWillie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Jimmy Fallon.

Here’s Dolly’s melancholy tune:

Listen, Dolly is amazing. Dolly can make you cry with a beautifully moving tune, or cry laughing by telling you about her husband’s erectile ability. That’s called versaility!

Here’s more of Dolly talking about some of her favorite songs:
