Manila Luzon Showed Off The Maxi-Pad Dress That “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Producers Wouldn’t Let Her Wear
RuPaul’s Drag Race is crass, tacky, and ridiculous. And that’s a big part of why it’s a hit. We’re not watching it for our health! We’re in it for the sweaty puns, the thirsty sexual innuendos, and the pretend back-stabbing. We are also in it for the artistry, the sickening looks, and the lols, all three of which All-Stars Season 4 cuntestant Manila Luzon consistently delivers. Fans of the show probably remember her most recent runway look, a quilted pink Louis XIV inspired ensemble for the “Curves and Swerves” challenge. Well that look wasn’t her first choice. Manila recently ruvealed on Instagram that her first choice was a maxi-pad inspired number, and it was vetoed by Ru Paul for being in “bad taste.” That made me say, “I’m sorry, cum again? Have you seen your show?”
The outfit Manila wore on the show was fine! Better than most even. It was good enough to (SPOILER ALERT) secure her spot in the top two (and I suspect, throw her lip sync so she didn’t have to be the one to send her girl Latrice Royale home). But her first choice was a-mah-zing. And Ru wouldn’t let her wear it. I’m honestly pussy-hurt by that. I mean, look. at. this.
It’s restrained, sophisticated perfection. Kotex never looked so expensive. What a clever interpretation of the theme. My only complaint is the Christmassy crinoline peeking out from under the skirt. And I might have paired this with tampon inspired earrings, and a globule-shaped rhinestone encrusted clutch that looked like blood clot. But that’s just me! What a disappointment that Ru was offended by this, of all things. Having a “maxi challenge” is ok but a maxi-pad is too far? OK. I see how it is.
It’s not like Ru doesn’t know his herstory. When did Drag Race get so precious? This is what happens when you move from Logo to Vh1. What a shame. That’s ok, Manila continues to strut in the shadows of the greats. If that dress was in bad taste, at least she’s got good company.
