Disney Got Dark With A “Dead Inside” Pinocchio Tweet

April 9, 2018 / Posted by:

Apparently, the terminally upbeat folks at Disney aren’t immune to lure of the dark, gaping chasm of despair that is the hallmark of #thesetryingtimes. Leave it to 2018 to harsh Mickey’s buzz so hard he starts posting dank memes about being dead inside.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney’s official twitter account posted a GIF of a doped-up-looking Pinocchio with a 1,000 yard stare along with the caption “When someone compliments you, but you’re dead inside“. Here’s the since deleted Tweet:

Disney content has honestly never been more relatable. The tweet was posted on Sunday at about 2 p.m. and didn’t get yanked until today.

The bleak tweet from the account with more than 5.9 million followers had nearly 30,000 retweets and a long list of comments before it was pulled.

That means a lot of people saw it, including Snow White who replied with a gif of the Seven dwarfs captioned “Hell is other people”. Sleeping Beauty posted a glass coffin selfie captioned “to live is to suffer” to which Goofy replied “suffer? I hardly know her!”. Fucking Goofy.

Digg says that the tweet was probably the result of Disney’s push into “fellow kids” territory with their Oh My Disney platform.

The GIF and caption originate with Oh My Disney, a Disney content team that aims to “re-tell our classic stories in a voice that speaks directly to digital natives.”

If Disney’s going to start embracing it’s dark side, I’m all for it. They’ve spent decades pretending they aren’t childhood ruiners but I still have nightmares of that gunshot ringing through the air in Bambi and Dumbo’s mom locked up in clown jail. I see you, Disney. Why not embrace the nihilism and existential dread inside. It’s OK if you need to get real with us sometimes.
