Suzanne Whang, The Original Host Of “House Hunters,” Has Died

There was a time when the only show I really watched or cared about was House Hunters on HGTV, so the show’s first host and narrator Suzanne Whang was a part of my daily life. She was also more important to the show than a House Hunter saying, “I can really see myself having my morning coffee out here,” while going out on a house’s balcony. So the news about her death has hit me like a wrecking ball of sadness. Suzanne was only 56.

Suzanne was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2006. She Crisco’d up her face, stuck razors in her hair, and dipped her fists in glue and shards of glass to battle the demonic piece of trash known as cancer. Suzanne was very open about her cancer fight, and used humor to get her through it, and later wrote and starred in a solo show about it. Her cancer went into remission, but earlier this year, she tweeted the horrible news that she developed a stage 4 cancer tumor on her sternum. Again, being the bright shining treasure that she is, she used that shitty news to raise money for charity and bring the LOLs.

And that brings us to yesterday when Suzanne’s partner Jeff Vezain delivered the sad news that she died at their home in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening:

Suzanne was the first host of House Hunters, starting in 1999. Unlike the House Hunters episodes of today, Suzanne originally hosted onscreen, and while walking down some neighborhood, she’d tell us about the fighting couple who’d definitely get a divorce before choosing an actual damn house to buy. Suzanne left House Hunters in 2007, and was secretly replaced with an imposter voice, which may or may not have lead to HGTV’s inbox getting filled with ALL-CAPS e-mails of pure drunken rage from a certain skinny fat gay fan.

Besides House Hunters, Suzanne also starred in Here TV’s From Here On OUT, had a recurring role as Polly Chae on Las Vegas, and guest starred on Nip/Tuck, Brothers & Sisters, General Hospital, and Arrested Development. She also had a B.A. in Psychology from Yale and a Masters in Cognitive Phycology from Brown. Not to mention (“Please don’t mention it.” – Suzanne Whang) that she was an early Hot Slut of the Day.

Rest in peace, Suzanne Whang. You are now in heaven where you’ll never ever ever have to hear the words, “The kitchen is a size nice but it doesn’t have my granite countertops,” again.
