Open Post: Hosted By TikTok Bringing Back The “Shower Orange” Trend
You wouldn’t slow-cook a roast beef in your laundry room, would you? Well, if you do, just know there are some folks who believe Bathroom Bites are the next big thing, as they are purposely peeling and eating oranges in the shower. And it has become one of the latest TikTok trends that show people will do anything as long as it leads to a viral moment.
HuffPo reports this trend actually began in 2015 on Reddit, but has somehow returned to our lives because people must be bored once again. And I get it; you don’t necessarily have to be cleansing yourself during your seductive citrus shower, but who in the hell has water bill money to be wasting on a trend that will be dead by the end of the week?
“I first saw this concept on TikTok,” registered dietitian Maggie Michalczyk told HuffPost. “It was just a video of someone peeling an orange in a steamy shower with mellow music and no real context as to why. It looked really relaxing, and I could almost smell the citrusy orange from watching the video. I thought, ‘I’ve gotta try that because I bet it would be really energizing!’”
Michalczyk tried the shower orange process with Sumo Citrus, which is easy to peel. And she found she enjoyed the way the shower steam exaggerated the scent.
Replying to @rxskiii oranges are just better eaten this way. #HolidayOREOke #oranges #fyp #relatable #foryou #explore #seekdiscomfort
I guess this could serve as an example of multi-tasking because you can easily wash your fruit, and your armpits, in the same place at the same time. I’m sorry, but this is just nasty. And honestly, nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner says it may lead to the development of another bad habit: eating in the shower all the time.
“This is because the activities can start acting like a ‘cue’ that you need to eat,” she explained. “So every time you get in the shower, you really don’t want it to cue you to have to eat. It’s fine to eat an orange in the shower once to do the experiment, but don’t make it a habit. It’s really best to eat and enjoy food from a plate while seated at a table.”
Here’s a thought: buy citrus-scented body wash. You don’t have to peel anything AND you won’t have to worry about leftover peels you might slip on in the shower. Sounds like a much safer idea to me.
