Lady Susan Hussey Apologized To Ngozi Fulani For Asking Her “Where Are You From?”

A couple of weeks ago, Buckingham Palace faced (yet another) racism scandal. On November 29, Ngozi Fulani, CEO of the charity Sistah Space, attended an event at Buckingam Palace. Ngozi says that ten minutes into the reception, THE QUEEN’S former lady-in-waiting and Prince William’s godmother, 83-year-old Lady Susan Hussey, approached her, moved her hair to see her name badge, and rudely interrogated her about where British Ngozi was “really from.” “What part of Africa are you from?” After Ngozi went public with her story, Buckingham Palace released a statement saying that “the individual concerned” was sorry and had resigned from her royal duties. Ngozi did some interviews about the incident, and while many supported her, she also got a lot of shit from Internet randos and British media outlets. Today, People reports that the palace announced that Lady Hussey and Ngozi had finally met “to address the incident.” According to this statement, Lady Hussey offered her “sincere apologies,” and Ngozi accepted.

Here is some of the statement. via People:

“At this meeting, filled with warmth and understanding, Lady Susan offered her sincere apologies for the comments that were made and the distress they caused to Ms Fulani,” the palace said in the statement. “Lady Susan has pledged to deepen her awareness of the sensitivities involved and is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the issues in this area.”

They continued, “Ms Fulani, who has unfairly received the most appalling torrent of abuse on social media and elsewhere, has accepted this apology and appreciates that no malice was intended.”

Ngozi posted Buckingham Palace’s full statement on the Sistah Space Instagram:

The palace also released a photograph of the apology meeting:

After this picture was taken, Lady Hussey probably leaned over and said, “Now that this is all over and done with, will you finally tell me where you’re really from? I’ve been absolutely dying to know!”
