Open Post: Hosted By Frederic The Extremely Particular Kitty

BoingBoing reports that German cat photographer Nils Jacobi, aka @furryfritz, shared a disturbing TikTok of his ginger kitty, Frederic. In the video, poor Frederic stands in front of a bowl filled with tuna and looks up at his father expectantly as if to say, “Are you fuckin’ kidding me?” Sure, his bowl is full, but the tuna isn’t positioned properly! He can only eat it if it’s piled high! After eight truly excruciating seconds, neglectful Nils finally takes the hint, and fashions Frederic’s food into a pile with a spoon. Frederic immediately digs in, but he hasn’t forgotten his father’s failings. Especially after Nils added the shady caption: “Tell me your cat is spoiled without telling me your cat is spoiled.” Spoiled?! These are basic feline rights!

A bunch of people took to the comments to defend Frederic’s honor. They wrote stuff like, “THIS BABY’S NOT SPOILED, IT’S WHISKER FATIGUE!!!!” Whisker fatigue is when a cat’s whiskers get over-stimulated, and even brushing them against food and water dishes causes pain. Usually, the solution is to get a different bowl. But Nils refuted the whisker fatigue truthers. He thanked them for their concern but clarified that, actually, “it’s just a tuna thing”: “it’s more like he flattens the tuna with his tongue and then he can’t bite it properly.” Translation: “the silly baby’s whiskers are fine; he’s just a silly baby.”

I’d call Frederic a picky, high-maintenance puss, but I’ve never had a cat who didn’t pull this kind of shit. My tiny tabby Bobby eats out of a metal bowl, and if he spots even a peek of metal underneath his Duck à la Veg kibble, he’ll stop eating. Bobby requires a full bowl of food/NO METAL VISIBLE. I’m constantly re-filling that shit! But, honestly, I can’t blame him. I do the same with my red wine. “Oops, I only have an inch left. TOP IT UP! TOP IT UP!” Monkey see, monkey do.
