Bryan Singer’s Ex-Boyfriend Writes About Their “Abusive And Traumatizing” Relationship

Everything I allegedly know about Bryan Singer is, how you say – not great. He’s been accused of being a sexual predator and a horrible boss. Most people are familiar with the former, which can be summed up as Bryan Singer has been accused multiple times of sexually assaulting young men and sometimes underage boys. Well, his former boyfriend of four years spoke to Variety about their relationship, and I’m sure you’ll be thoroughly shocked to learn that it wasn’t four years of flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and Red Lobster dates. Less surprising? That his ex was a teenager when they first got together. You saw that one coming, didn’t you?

Blake Stuerman, who is now 30 years old, spoke to Variety about what it was allegedly like to date Bryan Singer for four years. Variety says they spoke to 20 people (18 that chose to remain anonymous) for this story, and to corroborate the allegations made by Blake, which they claim have been verified through pictures, documents, emails, and first-person accounts via those interviews. And there are multiple pictures of Bryan and Blake together, like this one of them on a private jet.

Blake says he met Bryan in 2009 when Bryan was 43 and Blake had just turned 18 a few days earlier. Although Blake says he looked no older than 15, and that Bryan asked to see his driver’s license on the night they met (a million yikes for all of that, even if it’s perfectly legal). They met in New York, and Bryan convinced Blake to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film Blake thought Bryan truly was trying to mentor him, so his guard was down, and also he was flattered that the director of the X-Men franchise was so concerned about him and his future. So Blake moved to LA, where he got to hang out with Bryan Singer all the time.

Blake also says that he didn’t drink or do drugs when he met Bryan, but that Bryan pressured him to drink. That’s also how Blake alleges he had his first sexual encounter with Bryan, which Blake describes as being clouded by booze and also by the inability to know that he was allowed to say no. Blake also alleges that Bryan would have older men over to his home and would host really young men to party with them, which…is something we’ve heard alleged before. Blake also says that whenever he was invited to Bryan’s house, there was an expectation of sex in exchange for all the fancy rich guy stuff Bryan was treating him to, like dinners with Elton John and invites to film festivals. Blake says he had convinced himself that there wasn’t anything wrong with what was happening. via Variety:

For a long time – including up to a few years ago – I would vehemently defend Bryan. He’s not like what you hear! He’s very generous! No, he’s never been inappropriate with me! If he was so awful, do you think I’d be friends with him?

I didn’t want to be another one of Bryan’s boys that got used and discarded. I wanted to tell stories – it’s what I’m meant to do. It’s what he told me I’m meant to do. I watched as he could make or break a career on a whim. He could turn his friends into millionaires because he felt like it. It’s what he kept promising to do for me.

If Blake wanted to check out for the evening, he says that Bryan would allegedly pressure Blake to not do something that would “throw his career away.” And one time, Bryan’s alleged possessiveness of Blake had Bryan getting violent with a party guest. Blake says that one night, guests were still partying and Bryan was in his bedroom asleep. Blake was sitting by the pool when all of a sudden, Bryan appeared out of nowhere and lost it.

I heard loud yelling coming toward me. When I turned, I saw Bryan charging toward us screaming very angrily. He violently attacked one of the guests near me. I grabbed Bryan and took him back into the house. His eyes were wild and full of rage. I had never seen him like this before. We went to his room and he slammed the door. I found a shattered lamp on the floor and began picking up the pieces.

“I’ll fucking kill you if you leave me.” Those were his exact words. I had never witnessed or experienced physical violence before meeting Bryan.

Blake says that around this time, his career did start taking off, like getting invited to sit in on projects that Bryan was working on, but also that things got way tenser between himself and Bryan. Blake says he wasn’t allowed to see anyone else, and basically existed at Bryan’s house all the time. During the filming of X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2013, Blake says he started having panic attacks from the stress of being with Bryan Singer, one of which required hospitalization. He added that he was so exhausted because Bryan would make him go out every night, and pressured him to drink, even when Blake told Bryan he wanted to remain sober. The breaking point for Blake came when he confronted Bryan about his drinking and constantly ragey behavior:

As he became more erratic and under pressure during filming, I was his primary source of relief. Everything was my fault. If he didn’t get fucked last night? It was my fault. If he pissed the bed from drinking too much? Somehow, it was my fault…Bryan would keep the actors and crew waiting while he worked to sober up in the mornings. We would come up with excuses to buy more time. As calls would come in telling us they were ready for him to come to set, he would lash out at me. One morning, I just couldn’t take much more of what he was saying to me. My body couldn’t take much more. I told him he was an alcoholic and needed help. He flew into a rage and screamed back, “I know I’m a fucking alcoholic! You just fucked up, man. You just fucked up so bad. GET THE FUCK OUT!”

Last year, Olivia Munn came out with her experience of working with Bryan Singer on 2015’s X-Men: Apocalypse. She claimed an erratic Bryan went missing for 10 days for some random thyroid-related reason. So yeah, it sounds like the X-Men franchise doesn’t bring out the best in Bryan Singer.

Blake says that after he was kicked off the X-Men: Days of Future Past set for accidentally oversleeping through a brunch date with Bryan, he returned to LA, let Bryan know he needed out, and a “low five-figure” separation payment was handed over to Blake on his way out. His name was also missing from the credits of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Blake claims he had to leave Hollywood and move back in with his parents, and he believes he was struggling with PTSD.

Naturally, Bryan Singer is denying everything Blake told Variety. Bryan’s lawyer released a four-page letter to Variety, in which they paint Blake as a bitter liar and a failed gold digger who was grown enough to know what he was participating in.

“The types of allegations that Mr. Steurman [sic] now is leveling against Mr. Singer are nothing more than self-serving and conclusory statements with absolutely no evidentiary support. Mr. Stuerman is angry and upset that he allegedly did not receive the ‘credit’ that he thought he deserved on Mr. Singer’s films…And, most of all, he is angry and upset that Mr. Singer is no longer funding Mr. Stuerman’s jet setting lifestyle and supporting Mr. Stuerman financially, as he had done for so many years.

It is evident…that Mr. Stuerman does not want to take any responsibility and/or accountability for the decisions he made and actions he took as an adult. Rather, he spins a tale of alleged grooming and abuse, supposedly at the hands of Mr. Singer, even though Mr. Stuerman acknowledges he was a ‘willing participant’ in the relationship.”

That’s pretty much the response I’d expect from a guy who knows his way around a settlement check.
