Debra Messing Ponders The Question: Why Is Kim Kardashian Hosting “Saturday Night Live”?

September 23, 2021 / Posted by:

Yesterday, Saturday Night Live announced the first four hosts of their upcoming 47th season. Sandwiched between Golden Globe-nominated actor Owen Wilson and Oscar-winner Rami Malek was underwear company owner, attempted lawyer, and Photoshop abuser Kim Kardashian. It was a bit of an odd choice, as Emily pointed out yesterday, due to the fact that usually when a person agrees to host SNL, it’s because they have a project they need to promote, like a movie or a new season of a television show. Kim Kardashian has…well, let’s see here. What reason does Kim have to be hosting a live sketch comedy show? That’s the question Debra Messing wondered out loud upon hearing of Kim’s hosting job.

Kim will host on October 9th, two weeks before her 41st birthday, with musical guest Halsey. Debra Messing decided to call out Kim’s manager Kris Jenner, Lorne Michaels, the booking agents at SNL, and the poor person who had to write Kim’s name on that little teal index card, by asking: WHY. And then her follow-up question: No really, WHY.

Unlike some of the previous times Debra has squared off on Twitter in the name of artistic integrity, Debra did call Kim a “cultural icon.” And yes, usually the host is a performer who is doing good by their publicist, but let’s not act like SNL is above some sad, desperate acts in the name of attention (see: Elon Musk and Donald Trump).

But I think Debra’s questions are valid, and she just needs some brief education on the matter! Kim Kardashian played a poodle in the summer blockbuster, PAW Patrol: The Movie, so technically she can add “actress” to her resume. Not that she needed that PAW Patrol credit to qualify her as a talented, committed performer worthy of Saturday Night Live’s sketches. Personally, I think she’ll be the perfect host. For example, she spent 20 seasons on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and not once in those 20 seasons did she ever break character and burst out laughing, “I’m sorry, but we’re supposed to believe that’s still Khloé?” every time her sister showed up with a new face.
