Phoebe Waller-Bridge Left Amazon’s “Mr. And Mrs. Smith” Series Over Creative Differences With Donald Glover

Earlier this year Amazon announced they were rebooting Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a series starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover. At the time, Phoebe and Donald’s partners were likely preparing for the worst: full-on public cheating scandal, “Phoebald” headlines dominating the news cycle for a decade, a fleet of children, and, finally, a contentious celebrity divorce. So imagine their relief when it was reported that Phoebe had left the series due to creative differences with Donald. A loss for Amazon, but a major win for monogamy!
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Phoebe left the series cuz she and Donald had different creative visions. They claim the two “remain friends” and it was “an amicable split.” In addition to starring as the Brad Pitt-male lead, Donald is also the show’s showrunner, executive producer, and co-creator (alongside Francesca Sloane). Donald and Phoebe appeared together in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and apparently he was the one who had the idea for her to co-star.
Neither Donald and Phoebe are hard up for work. They both have deals with Amazon, and, in addition to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Donald is currently working on a show called Hive and the fourth season of FX’s Atlanta (he wrote all the scripts himself). He also just finished production on the third season of Atlanta, which will debut in the first half of 2022. As for Pheebs, she’s currently in production on Indiana Jones 5 and is executive producer for the upcoming final season of Killing Eve. Ugh, as a proud lazy person, both of their schedules sound like absolute nightmares. When do they rewatch old seasons of Top Chef?!
Sources say Mr. & Mrs. Smith will remain on track to debut in 2022, and Phoebe’s role will be recast. In a perfect world, they’d deliver the female lead back to its original owner: Angelina Jolie. Angie can play the same character from the first movie, except now she’s remarried to yet another secret agent, and, again, doesn’t know it. You know what they say: The bigger your lips, the smaller your ability to get a clue.
