In keeping with Dlisted’s long-standing tradition of honoring cat burglars from around the world, we’re paying tribute on this Caturday to a local criminal legend from Beaverton, Oregon. This ALLEGED pussy thief’s snatching antics are so prolific in her town that her human Kate Felmet had to call her out in a lawn sign! I know, that’s brave of Kate who either has a death wish or really likes to wake up with fresh cat cookies in her slippers.
Kate Felmet tells KOIN6 that during the past few months, her cat Esme has been coming home with masks, gloves, and other items. Maybe Esme is preparing for a possible second wave of the pandemic and is stocking up?! But Kate is not amused because Esme is stealing from the park and neighbors’ garages. So Kate decided to make a sign calling out Esme as the Lindsay Lohan of Oregonian cats and put it next to a clothesline with the stolen goods hanging from it. Kate does admit that she may have encouraged Esme’s klepto-cat ways because when Esme first brought home a bunch of masks, Kate rewarded the cat with treats because she was happy the gifts weren’t dead birds like usual.
Some neighbors have picked up their stolen stuff, but most people just want to take pictures of the sign. And Esme’s life of crime went on a hiatus for a week after the sign went up:
“As soon as I put the sign up, she went for a week of not bringing me anything. I had the impression she was a little mad about it,” she said.
Felmet said people come “every now and then” to take things, but mostly they want a look at the sign.
“People come by and mostly take pictures, but we had the school bus drive by and take a few pairs of gloves,” Felmet said. “I’ve been thinking about making another sign that says take a pair of gloves if you want ’em.”
Some have called out Kate for thief-shaming her cat, but Kate says that’s not really possible since Esme is the opposite of ashamed over her thieving ways. As Esme should be!
You know, this could start a legal war between Esme and Kate. Esme could sue Kate for libel and would easily win. I mean, it’s impossible for a cat to be a thief since everything in the world already belongs to them! Even the law knows that.
