Demi Lovato Comes Out As Non-Binary

Demi Lovato is busier than me whenever someone asks me if I’ve got plans tonight (“Actually, I’m really fucking busy tonight” is what I say before packing another bowl and continuing to binge-watch The Circle from my bed). But Demi is actually really busy. Demi’s trying to put Tom DeLonge out of a job by investigating aliens in a show for Peacock. Demi’s also working on an NBC comedy about a food issues group. And Demi’s got a new album to peddle. Not to mention that Demi’s also got to maintain a flawless eyebrow situation and constantly take a Flowbee to that hair bowl to keep it Lloyd Christmas-ey. Well, Demi’s added another project to their plate. Demi’s got a new podcast, 4D With Demi, and in the show’s first episode, Demi says that they’re non-binary. But before the non-binary community braces themselves over the thought that Demi is about to become the new face of them, Demi isn’t trying to be a spokesperson for the non-binary community.

In a video that Demi posted on Instagram and Twitter, they say that they spent a lot of time self-reflecting and realized that they’re non-binary. Demi’s pronounces are they/them, and again, they say that they’re still learning and not claiming to have a Ph.D. in all things non-binary:

For the episode, 28-year-old Demi, who came out as pansexual in March, brought on 29-year-old non-conforming author and artist Alok Vaid-Menon and they talked about how even they trip up on pronouns a bit. Demi also says that they know some people are going to say that they’re just pulling stunts for attention and not everybody is going to accept them, but Demi doesn’t really care since they’re putting their well-being above their career. Demi mentions that their overdose opened their eyes to how they were burying who they really are to please others. via Mediate:

The two opened up about misgendering themselves, Vaid-Menon admitting they sometimes “forget,” earning a chuckle from Lovato who revealed the same.

“It’s not as if trans and non-binary people are born with gender literacy,” Vaid-Menon said, adding “it’s something that we develop in order to be better for each other. So, if we could do it, you could do it, too. It just takes practice and commitment.”

Later in the podcast, Lovato shared that their 2018 overdose happened largely because they were “ignoring their truth.”

“I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists or team members or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy feminine pop star in a leotard and look a certain way,” they said. “I thought that was what I was supposed to be. Now I realize it’s so much more important to live your truth than to ever suppress yourself because that’s the type of stuff that happens when you do.”

Here’s the episode:

Well, good for Demi for speaking their (*in Oprah’s voice while dramatically lowering my glasses*) TRUTH. And now that Demi has joined literally every single human on earth (including this trick) in doing a weekly podcast, they might not have much time to once again lose it over sugar-free cookies (the wire hangers to their Joan Crawford) in frozen yogurt shops. So L.A. area froyo places are safe…for now.
