Bernie Sanders’ Inauguration Day Mittens!

At today’s inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, Lady Gaga served up some yodel-lay-hee-hoo-ing at the Hunger Games-themed Met Gala subtleness, Jennifer Lopez gave usif a bottle of White Diamonds was a person” modesty, and the Biden granddaughters looked like neopolitan ice cream going to brunch in Manhattan. And they all really, really tried, but it was Bernie Sanders who became the fashion star of the inauguration by looking like a Vermont pepaw who just stopped by to say hi before going to the post office to mail in his Lands’ End order.

Vogue, who finally reported on a fashion-forward look for once, says that Bernie’s jacket is from a Vermont-based company called Burton and his mittens were handmade out of recycled materials by a teacher in Essex Junction, Vermont who gave them to him as a gift years ago:

The large brown-and-cream knit pair had a vague nod to a Fair Isle pattern, while the palms boasted blue and white hues. There is a sweet story behind them too: They were created by Jen Ellis, a teacher from Vermont, who noted on Twitter that she made them from repurposed wool from sweaters and later lined them with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles.

While nearly everyone at today’s inauguration was dressed in weekday daytime formalwear, Bernie shuffled on in like he was out running errads when he got the surprise appointment alert on his phone, letting him know he’s supposed to be at the inauguration so he just swung by in his Subaru:

To fully appreciate Bernie’s pepawcore ensemble, you have to take in this glorious picture of him looking like he’s waiting at the DMV and they just called #67 and he’s got #174. Bernie also looks like me in an office when the A/C is cranked at full blast:

Of course, Bernie and his mittens have become a meme, but jokes aside, in decades when this day is taught in history class, teachers will focus on three important things: Biden becoming POTUS, Kamala Harris becoming the first woman of color as VP, and Bernie’s mittens.
