SZA Swears That She And Drake Dated When She Was Over 18
Last year, there were rumors that Drake, Toronto’s second-most beloved resident (RIP to that little white squirrel), was getting with Kylie Jenner. That rumor was quickly shot down, thanks to the assurance that Kylie would never date a “womanizer” like Drake. The use of the word “womanizer” probably made at least one person raise an eyebrow, considering that Drake has been known to be very social with the people who have not yet reached the legal definition of adulthood.
Recently, Drake had those same people feeling weird again, thanks to a song in which it sounds like the 33-year-old Drake was bragging about dating 29-year-old singer SZA back in 2008, when she would have been (big eesh) seventeen years old. SZA knows it sounds plenty creepy, and she wanted to clear the situation up. According to SZA, Drake got the timeline wrong.
Here’s the song in question. It’s called, “Mr. Right Now” by 21 Savage and Metro Boomin featuring Drake, released last week.
Drake’s verse begins at the 1:30 mark, and he says:
Yeah, said she wanna fuck to some SZA, wait
Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08
If you cool with it baby, she can still play
If the horny half-naked woman lounging on Drake’s tacky $395,000 mattress did the math, then they might not be cool with the fact that Drake appears to have confessed to dating an underage girl. But SZA hopped on Twitter and explained that Drake was wrong when he claimed that they dated in 2008. She says it was actually 2009, and she was 18 then.

The timeline is still a little confusing, so I’ll try to work it out. SZA says they dated in 2009. In May 2009, Drake reportedly went on his first date with Rihanna. While presenting Rihanna with the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 2016, he claimed that he had been in love with Rihanna since he was 22 years old. They dated off and on for seven years. So if Drake and SZA did date in 2009, it could have happened between January and April. SZA was born in November 1990. So, she would have been 18 if she dated Drake between the months of November 2008 and November 2009. That’s fine! But maybe still, SZA might not have liked getting dragged into all of this, because as TMZ points out, she has unfollowed him on Instagram shortly after “Mr. Right Now” dropped.
So it was 2009, allegedly, which means Drake wasn’t allegedly chasing an underage SZA. But still, Drake is a multi-Grammy-winning rapper. He wasn’t able to rhyme ’09 with anything? Fine? Wine? Sign? Hell, the perfect sex-adjacent ’09 rhyme is right there staring him in the face: Amanda Bynes!
