Boy George Tweeted About Pete Buttigieg, And It Got Messy
Actually, let me clarify: Boy George tweeted about Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg, and it was messy right from the get-go.
Yesterday, Boy George decided to comment on Mayor Pete’s supporters and fan base demographics. The Los Angeles Times recently published a story on Mayor Pete, who is currently polling in 4th place behind Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders, respectively. According to The Times, Mayor Pete is a big hit with white people, and that’s about it (The Times points out that Biden, Warren, and Sanders all poll well with the black community, while Pete’s numbers are in the single-digits). The New York Times has suggested that his sexuality is a “hurdle” for some people, although CNN disputes this. Pete’s allegedly having a hard time in South Carolina, and Boy George decided to throw in his two cents on the subject.
Boy George tweeted this:
Sad to hear that older black voters in South Carolina have issue with @PeteButtigieg living with his husband. People don't chose their race or their sexuality. God is constantly trying to teach us compassion and we won't listen!

Some Twitter users decided to make like Mayor Pete’s last name and judge the hell out of Boy George for such a sweeping generalization. Generally, people weren’t happy with Boy George pointing his finger at old black people, while others pointed out that maybe Mayor Pete doesn’t have the best relationship with the black community in his town of South Bend, Indiana.
This is not even remotely close to accurate. Black voters have more favorable views of Pete than white voters and many are open to voting for him. He’s done a bad job with outreach and his record is questionable at best. Stop this myth.

That you and others like you would minimize the black vote to homophobia is disgusting. Every politician needs to earn our votes, Pete has failed the black community in South Bend. That’s why he will not get our vote.

Ah…it's older Black voters' fault? Sure. Want to explain how Trump got elected? (Psssst, it wasn't black voters' fault either. I recommend looking at the real numbers.)

Or maybe they just prefer someone else?

Umm Before you try to swoop in and be the gay hope for Pete he polls 0% with black people in his own State. Maybe he should fix that before he runs for president.

Talking politics on Twitter is usually a guaranteed bad time. I’m pretty sure the only way Boy George could tweet about American politics without his mentions turning into a flaming trash fire would be if he typed the words, “Politics starts with the letter P.” And even then, I’m sure there would be at least one person who would scream fake news and accuse him of pushing some kind of agenda. But guess what? Boy George clearly doesn’t care.
Such a modern and overused word. Disappointment. I am not in politics but I'm in it and I will say what I feel, when I feel and I can live with your disappointment because what have you ever done for me? Or my dog? https://t.co/VQNmI8Mk3d

I'm delighted that I do not know any of the fuck-wits on the internet!

WE
WE
WE
WE
WE
WE! https://t.co/rIRU6Zmq7d— Boy George (@BoyGeorge) November 4, 2019
Nobody is telling Boy George not to have an opinion, it’s just that the internet is suggesting that when he says “we,” he only speak for 58-year-old gay hat enthusiasts from England. And if he has to push for a candidate, he should be tweeting that he’ll tumble 4 Pete. What’s the point of having a well-known discography if you can’t use it in a punny way?
