Say It Ain’t So: Gina Gershon Will Star In Woody Allen’s Next Movie

After giving one of the finest cinematic performances of the 20th century as Cristal Connors in Showgirls, you’d think Gina Gershon could write her own ticket for the rest of her career. Well, apparently that’s not so. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gina has agreed to work with societal reject Woody Allen on his next project. Imagine, THEE Gina Gershon, who just a few short years ago starred in the criminally ignored masterpiece 9/11 opposite Charlie Sheen, has been brought so low as to sign on to do a shitty movie that would be lucky to get picked up by RFD-TV.

The movie doesn’t have a title yet, but it’s set in Spain and will also star Christoph Waltz, some of those free-wheeling Europeans Anjelica Huston was talking about, and inconceivably, Wallace Shawn.

The movie will star Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz, Gina Gershon and Wallace Shawn, as well as Sergi López (Dirty Pretty Things, Pan’s Labyrinth), French actor Louis Garrel (Godard Mon Amour) and Elena Anaya (Wonder Woman, The Skin I Live In).

The working title on the film, which will begin shooting in July in San Sebastian, is WASP2019.

The story centers on a married American couple who go to the San Sebastian Film Festival and get caught up in the magic of the festival, the beauty and charm of Spain and the fantasy of movies. She has an affair with a brilliant French movie director, and he falls in love with a beautiful Spanish woman who lives there. It is a comedy-romance that resolves itself in a funny but romantic way.

I’ve been to San Sebastian and it is an incredible location. And I’ve never eaten better in my life. So maybe Gina just sees this as an opportunity for a free vacation where she can sit on the beach, sip sangria, and eat pintxos until her stomach explodes. All on Woody Allen’s dime. It’s a helluva way to go, but I guess it’s better than going back to domestic champagne and Doggy Chow.
