Since she’s from Philly like yours truly (and we have the same birthday), Patti LaBelle is my favorite auntie in my mind. Her over the top penguin arm flapping, ninja star shoe throwing style of entertainment has been giving me my life since I was a kid. However, I never knew she had so many stories from her career and one story that I wasn’t expecting was how she got to slap Mariah Carey around back in the day. Well, maybe not slap her around like in a street fight but Mariah definitely caught Patti’s hands once or twice.
Too Fab reports that Patti recently shimmied on over to chat with Busy Phillips during her talk show Busy Tonight and while she was there she kicked her feet up and got real comfortable. Aunt Patti has always been very outspoken so you can only imagine how candid she was. First, Busy asked Patti about her nasty alter-ego Priscilla who will come out like The Enchantress from Suicide Squad and light fire to everyone’s asses if she becomes displeased.
“She’s ugly. She’s [a] very, very bad girl. I don’t like her,” LaBelle said. “She comes out whenever she has to … When things are not done the way that I need to see them, I get a little Priscilla-ish. She comes out and she’s not cute. And then I snap out of it, that other Gemini takes over and says, ‘Patti don’t do that.'”
Busy went on to ask Patti what advice she had for the crop of lady singers coming up in this new era, and though it looked like Priscilla was about to join the conversation, she kept it classy and cute by simply stating, “Just keep your clothes on“. That advice was probably dismissed by Mariah Carey who is always nekkid now. That’s probably why Patti admitted to asking her goddaughter Mariah “What did the five fingers say to the face?” every now and then.
Of Mariah, she said, “I have to slap her every now and then. But she’s so phenomenal and so good, she doesn’t need to be slapped anymore. That’s my baby.”
Patti also told stories about Elton John owing her Tupperware from years of feeding him and his band and she also spoke about the time comedian Richard Pryor bought her a car. There was even a moment where, during a strange flower arrangement segment, Patti explained how she enjoys watching crime dramas like The First 48, claiming that sometimes she can be a bit dismal. But none of that phased Busy because during the entire interview she looked on in sheer delight, probably waiting for the perfect moment to break out her most heartfelt rendition of Lady Marmalade. I’m kinda mad she didn’t do that though because I would have loved to see Priscilla come out and shut that shit down with a quick Patti Pie to Busy’s face in protest.
