Open Post: Hosted By Shia LaBeouf As His Own Dad

The Beef is back, ya’ll! And surprise, surprise; he’s doing some meta artsy-farty movie in which he plays his own dad. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shia LaBeouf is filming a movie called Honey Boy (his dad’s nickname for him), which he wrote, and is playing a character based on his father, Jeffrey Craig LaBeouf. Jeffrey apparently is among the follically challenged so, Shia being Shia, sports a partially shaved his head and goober glasses for the role.

Here’s The Beef Jr. as The Beef Sr. – The Beef Jr. will be played by Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird), who looks nothing like him. Who else is hungry for a steak now?

If Shia looks like a busted sex offender, recovering heroin addict, ex-clown drifter, there’s a good reason.

The script landed on the Black List with the following description: “A child actor and his law-breaking, alcohol-abusing father attempt to mend their contentious relationship over the course of a decade.”

Shia’s dad sounds like a real piece of work. In his GQ interview (the one where he apologized for his drunken, racist tirade and arrest in Georgia last summer), Shia said his dad’s behavior is what drives him as an actor (via GQ):

And a lot of my shit has to do with my relationship with my dad,” he says. “That dude is my gasoline.” Whenever a scene required LaBeouf to conjure intense emotion, Jeffrey would stand next to the camera, just off set, so that LaBeouf could see him, focus on him. “I could work myself up into a frenzy,” he says. “He’s the whole reason I became an actor.”

Regular sessions with a licensed therapist are probably a more effective (and cheaper) way of dealing with childhood trauma, but at this point I don’t think anyone would expect Shia to do things the easy (or private) way. Let’s just hope he doesn’t go too method with this one or he’s gonna wind up as one ragin’ Cajun!
