Mariah Carey And Jennifer Lopez Do A Diva Duet With Dueling Paper Covers

Paper magazine is out with four Las Vegas-themed covers. One with Ricky Martin, one with the Backstreet Boys, and two featuring two wildly different Divas: Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez. One dances, sings and shimmies at an exhausting pace, the other is Mariah Carey. Mariah is always at her most Mariah when she’s having her picture made or when giving an interview, and here we get both!

First we’ll start with Mariah. Paper reports:

At our cover shoot, Carey’s outfits channel the glittery, over-the-top extravagance of her new city. “I think this is kind of a fairy princess moment,” she says of one sparkly gold tulle gown. “And I took off my shoes to be very Cinderella. Although I don’t know that Cinderella went as plunging in the neckline.” So, an adult, glamorous Cinderella? “Adult, glamorous…yeah, I guess so. If I have to be an adult, sure.”

For those of us who speak fluent Mariah, we know that when she says she took her shoes off to “be very Cinderella” what she really means is “have you seen these bloated hoofs I’m working with? I can stand in heels for 1 minute, maybe 2, but I ain’t walking in them and I sure as hell ain’t gonna last an entire photo shoot with these Christmas hams shoved into ¼ cup of Manolo Blahnik”. In fact, we don’t see Mimi’s feet at all in the entire shoot. We do see her legendary figure, though it’s partially hidden behind a wall, a voluminous dress and behind two inflatable pool toys. She knows she just has to smile and let the photo shop elves take care of the rest.

Now onto JLo.

Either paper magazine or JLo herself is being hella shady with this spread. JLo comes off as whirling dervish of energy and professionalism in stark contrast to sleepy Mariah, who said that her favorite thing about being in Las Vegas is going to her kids’ dentist (where she probably has a sweet hook-up for nitrous oxide).

Paper says of Jennifer:

In her dazzling Las Vegas show All I Have, superstar Jennifer Lopez says she thinks Vegas is the sexiest city in the world, and if it is, she’s a big reason why. The 48-year-old has never looked more gorgeous as she sings, dances and banters with the audience at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood. She wears a cavalcade of barely-there showgirl looks, including designs by Balmain and Versace, and barely seems to break a sweat as she unleashes 90 minutes of high-voltage, high-energy entertainment. Miraculously, the night of our post-show interview, Lopez spent a few more hours dancing up a storm with her dancers to celebrate a member of the company’s birthday.

In her interview, JLo talks about juggling multiple roles as a performer, producer, writer and actor while parenting twins (Mariah also has young twins), the beating her body takes during her show (she does literal cartwheels) and soaking up the energy of the city. Of her performance wardrobe, Paper reports:

They understand. Anybody I work with is like, “She has to be able to perform in this.” [We’re like], “And yes, we want three layers. We want a kaftan, and then we want a bodysuit, and then we wanna strip down [from] that bodysuit to a smaller bodysuit, so can you do that?” And then we kind of let them go from there.

JLo is truly impressive and I bet her show is a fucking blast. But let’s not discount Mariah’s show! She, um, well, let’s see. She doesn’t really talk about her show in the article, but she does say how much fun it would be to start a rumor that she has puppies with her at all times. She says, “I’ve already said that I insist on having puppies everywhere I go, which would be great! Like, that would be great, no?“. Yes, Mariah, puppies are great. You’re doing great, sweetie.
