Katy Perry Is In Talks To Join “American Idol” As A Judge

So it looks like there is someone wants to be a judge on ABCs unnecessary resurrection of American Idol. According to The Hollywood Reporter, one-time guest judge (as seen above in her Lead With The Boobies years) Katy Perry is “in active talks” to sign on as a head judge for American Idol.

The rumor that Katy Perry is about to judge a singing competition is still just a rumor, but we probably won’t have to wait too long to find out if it’s true. THR’s source claims that ABC is trying to lock down as many details as possible before announcing it at Upfronts tomorrow in NYC. This will be the first time Katy Perry has seriously considered joining a reality TV show; she reportedly turned down several eight-figure offers to appear as a judge on NBC’s The Voice.

This new American Idol plans on launching early next year, which means that Katy better enjoy as much of her summer as she can, because she’s going to be busy. Yesterday Katy announced the release of her fifth album, Witness, which is out in June. Then this morning, she announced that she’ll be on tour from September 2017 to February 2018. The tour art is giving me “struggle attempt at a Patrick Nagel costume for an 80s party.”

Katy hasn’t said anything about this possible gig with Idol. ABC has also been quiet. The only one who has been talking about Idol’s return today is Idol’s former home, Fox. Fox TV chairman Dana Walden crapped on ABC’s attempt at bringing Idol back after such a short amount of time while talking to Entertainment Weekly.

“They [Idol’s production company FreemantleMedia] were determined to get this show back on the air as quickly as possible. We spent about $25 million sending a clear message that it was the farewell season. It felt to us it would be extremely fraudulent to bring the show back quickly, that fans would not appreciate being told one thing and then having the show brought back right away.

We and Fremantle had very different points of view. The last conversation we had with them was about how the ratings had dropped over 70 percent over four years. There was clearly a ratings trend. It was not going in the right direction. The network was losing an enormous amount of money and we had asked them to make trims. And they felt, as is their right, that they didn’t want to take significant trims, they didn’t want to test out a new panel. They ultimately said to us they would rather rest the show after this season rather than make any changes, and that’s when we decided to call it the farewell season.”

Dana also not-so-subtly implied that the reason Idol is coming back is because FreemantleMedia needs the money. Shoot, I hope FreemantleMedia and ABC have enough money to put on this show. If not, they might have to go overboard with the product placement. Eh, I doubt Katy Perry will care. She does so many damn commercials for CoverGirl, shilling products on American Idol will be no big deal. She’ll roll into the auditions on the hood of a brand-new Ford Focus dressed like Mickey Mouse with a Coca-Cola IV drip stuck in her arm if she’s getting a check for it.

Here’s the possible American Idol judge looking like Tank Girl after a summer internship with Romy and Michele at KIIS-FMs Wango Tango in Los Angeles on Saturday.
