Amy Schumer Slaps Back At Everyone Who Thinks She’s Too Big To Play Barbie

December 7, 2016 / Posted by:

Last week it was announced that Amy Schumer is playing Barbie in Sony’s live-action Barbie movie, which was confusing to some people for a number of reasons, like why Sony was making a movie about Barbie over the much more glamorous fashion doll Tuesday Taylor (that’s confusing logic to me, at least). As Michael already pointed out, Barbie’s body is shaped like a Kardashian’s after a buggy photo-slimming app, and Amy Schumer’s body is shaped like a persons, which I’m sure made some people initially wonder how that was going to work. It was explained that Amy was going to play some sort of unconventional outcast Barbie. That made more sense. It didn’t matter to some people though, and they let it be known on Twitter that Amy doesn’t have the body to be playing any kind of Barbie. Well, Amy has words for those people.

Amy responded to the Barbie backlash yesterday by throwing up a picture of herself in a swimsuit to Instagram (one she has posted before to swat away haters) with a really long comment letting everyone know she doesn’t care that you think she doesn’t have a Barbie body.

Very very honored to be nominated for 2 Grammys and to be considered to play an important and evolving icon. Is it fat shaming if you know you're not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don't think so. I am strong and proud of how I live my life and say what I mean and fight for what I believe in and I have a blast doing it with the people I love. Where's the shame? It's not there. It's an illusion. When I look in the mirror I know who I am. Im a great friend, sister, daughter and girlfriend. I'm a badass comic headlining arenas all over the world and making tv and movies and writing books where I lay it all out there and I'm fearless like you can be. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support and again my deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice. It's that kind of response that let's you know something's wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it. Anyone who has ever been bullied or felt bad about yourself I am out there fighting for you, for us. And I want you to fight for yourself too! We need to laugh at the haters and sympathize with them. They can scream as loud as they want. We can't hear them because we are getting shit done. I am proud to lead by example. "I say if I'm beautiful, I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will" #thegirlwiththelowerbacktattoo

Bullying Amy for looking not exactly like Barbie doesn’t make sense to me. No human looks like Barbie. I mean, Barbie’s eyes alone take up a good 1/3 of her face, so really the only living thing that could play Barbie with any amount of accuracy would be a slow loris in a wig strapped to the neck of a store mannequin.

Amy says she’s a great choice to play Barbie, and I agree. My Barbies weren’t gorgeous models. They were run-down messes with busted hair and clothes made out of socks and they were always getting drunk on “coolers” (orange pop poured into pen caps) and falling down the spiral staircase of my Barbie Living Pretty Home and blacking out into a Barbie dog-pile on my Ribbons n’ Roses bed. The 8-year-old in me thinks Amy will make a perfect Barbie.
