“Hair Live!” Is Not Happening Anymore

TVLine is reporting that NBC’s next planned live television musical, Hair Live!, has been cut, shaved, swept up and dumped in the trash bin. You can thank the gods, the stars and the fates because you won’t have to suffer through another live musical disaster… at least for now.

Hair Live! was supposed to air on Sunday, May 19 and Emmy-winning director, Alex Rudzinski who did Grease: Live, and Jesus Christ Superstar, was going to direct. But apparently Hair is too EDGY for the family-oriented people over at NBC as a source says they are looking into making more “broad-based, family musicals” instead. Boring.

NBC entertainment co-chairmen, George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy made a statement about it:

“Live musicals are a part of this network’s DNA, and we are committed to continuing that tradition with the right show at the right time… Since these shows are such enormous undertakings, we need titles that have a wide appeal, and we’re in the process of acquiring the rights to a couple of new shows that we’re really excited about.”

Unlike that Rent Live fiasco on FOX, NBC has had more success with at least one of their live musicals, as Jesus Christ Superstar Live got them 13 Emmy nominations, of which they won five. They also did: The Sound of Music, The Wiz, and Hairspray. They even had planned a live Bye, Bye Birdie starring the one and only Jennifer Lopez, but thankfully that shit got shelved “indefinitely” last March.

Pour one out for Hair Live!, I guess? I don’t think people will miss this, but I am sad we won’t get to see how they handled that nude scene on live television with a PG-13 rating. But really, can we stop with the television musicals? We don’t need them.

…But if you are going to make another, the only acceptable one is The Magic Mike Musical. I only accept awkward televised showtunes if they come accompanied by bulging muscles.
