Earlier this week, Eva Mendes took to Instagram to let everyone in on a surprising beauty secret, which is that she shaves her face every other day! According to her, she’s so hairy that she considers herself a “beast,” which, to be honest, I never thought I’d have the mental image of Eva wearing a 5 o’clock shadow, but here we are, and it’s all thanks to a little sponcon.
In her first post, Eva gave a shout-out to Beauty Villa Vergara spa in Beverly Hills, California, describing her experience as “heaven.” Eva then proceeded to share what treatments she opted for. The first one on her list happened to be dermaplaning, which is sort of just a chic-er way of saying you shave your face. It involves shaving away the top layers of your skin to help with acne scarring, fine lines, skin brightening, and, in some cases, like Eva’s, getting rid of unwanted facial hair. This is how SELF describes dermaplaning:
Facial dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure that involves gently scraping your face with a scalpel to remove the epidermis—your top layer of skin—and small hairs, Jenny Kim, MD, PhD, professor of dermatology, medicine, and nutrition at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, tells SELF.
During a dermaplaning session performed by an expert, a dermatologist (or licensed esthetician in practice with a dermatologist) uses a medical-grade scalpel to scrape across the surface of the skin. The treatment typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and the dermaplaning cost can be anywhere from $40 to more than $150, depending on where you live and where you go (it will be more expensive to get a treatment from a board-certified dermatologist because they have more training).
Eva’s post started with, “Yes, I shaved my face!” This made her comments section grow faster than her beard with questions about the process and, most of all, praising her for normalizing that -gasp!- women also grow hair! Here’s the first post:
The next day she posted a close-up pic of her face with the caption, “I received a lot of comments on yesterday’s post from women who’ve been shaving their face for years.” Here’s what she went on to say via People:
“I guess “dermaplaning” is the preferred word but it is what it is and I LOVE it!” Mendes wrote in her caption on Instagram.
Mendes, 49, received hundreds of comments from curious fans with questions about her experience and responded to many, including one from a commenter who asked about how frequently she gets the treatment.
“I’m a beast so I probably need every other day! Ha. My hair grows back if I get chills,” she commented. “I’ll literally be shaving my legs in the shower and get chills and all my work is undone!”
I guess you can call her honesty- s(h)aving face! (hold the applause) But I’m having trouble wrapping my head around that of all the treatments she could be spending Ryan Gosling’s La La Land money on. Couldn’t she do laser hair removal? Guess she decided not by the hair on her chinny chin chin.
