Angela Bassett Gets Love From Fans After Her Reaction To Losing The Best Supporting Actress Oscar Goes Viral

March 13, 2023 / Posted by:

Everything Everywhere All At Once seriously slapped down its competition last night (and not in a Will Smith kind of way) by cleaning up at the Oscars. It added to its awards show haul with Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (for The Daniels, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Best Original Screenplay (The Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Film Editing, and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), for a grand total of seven wins. But while some wins for EEAAO were a shoo-in (Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor), others didn’t seem as much of a lock. Going into last night’s Oscars, it seemed that the Best Supporting Actress win was going to go to either Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Jamie Lee Curtis (EEAAO), or Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin). Jamie Lee, of course, got the Oscar. And Angela Basset’s reaction to losing out on another Oscar got attention with some feeling for her, while others called her “rude.” And yes, those “others” should remember their diss tweets for when they get to the Gates of Heaven and are locked out due to daring to drag THEE Angela Bassett.

Both Angela Bassett and seasoned nepo baby Jamie Lee Curtis have been in the game for decades. Jamie Lee has never been nominated for an Oscar before this year. And despite it seeming that Angela Bassett should be known as twenty-time Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, she’s been nominated only once before, in 1993, for Best Actress for her performance in What’s Love Got To Do With It? (Holly Hunter ended up winning for The Piano). Staying up way past mama’s bedtime paid off for Jamie Lee Curtis because she won. During her speech, Jamie gave a shout-out to horror movie fans and her Oscar-nominated parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. Jamie Lee must not have a contract with Activia anymore or she definitely would’ve said, “I just shit myself and not because of Activia this time!” Here’s Jamie Lee’s speech:

“I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I am not. I am hundreds of people. I’m hundreds of people. Where are the Daniels? Daniels, Jonathan, Ley Line, the entire crew, my bae, Michelle, Ke, Steph, the entire group of artists who made this movie, we just won an Oscar. To my dream team, my agent, Rick Kurtzman, Alan Wertheimer, Heidi Schaeffer, Sean James, Grace Ahn, Jane Ross, we just won an Oscar. To my family, my beautiful husband, Christopher Guest, our daughters, Annie and Ruby, my sister Kelly, we just won an Oscar. To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I have made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar together. My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories. I just won an Oscar.”

Many noticed that after Jame Lee’s name was announced by presenters Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur, Angela Bassett looked every layer of disappointed:

But while some felt for Angela, there are those who decided to call her out for “scowling” and for being a “sore loser” by not clapping. via Newsweek:

For others, Bassett should have showed some “grace and class.”

Twitter user @mrmikewinch got backlash for saying “Angela Bassett, not clapping, and scowling while Jamie Lee Curtis accepted the Oscar seemed foul. I get you’re disappointed but show some grace and class.”

Another Twitter user, @thewayoftheid, defended Angela against that tweet by writing, “Aaaaaand here we go. Expect more of this as women and particularly BW are not allowed to have a full range of emotions or be, y’know, human.

To paraphrase important early-aughts philosopher Cara Cunningham: LEAVE ANGELA BASSETT ALOOOOOONE! It’s not like Angela rolled her eyes before dramatically storming out of there. Besides, people are assuming Angela was disappointed. Maybe she was in an open-eyed coma because, like most of us, the Oscars put her ass to sleep. Or maybe, Angela was slightly relieved over losing and solely because if she won, she just knew that Ariana DeBose would open the envelope and say: Angela Bassett DID… you know the rest.
