Renegade, the dog who “caught” a home run ball at a Mets game!

Last night, the New York Mets battled the Washington Nationals on their home turf of Citi Field. The Mets technically won, but the real winner was Renegade, the golden retriever who ended up with a home run ball in his mouth. Renegade won the night by busting out a grand slam of awwwwws!

It was Bark at the Park night at Citi Field yesterday, and so fans were able to bring their pooches to the game. Chris Howland brought three of his family dogs to the stadium. During the game, Francisco Lindor of the Mets hit a home run, and the ball flew into the stands. Now, I’d like to picture Renegade proving that he’s one of Air Bud’s kin by leaping through the air to catch that flying ball with his mouth, but that’s not exactly what happened. Chris tells MLB that the ball was careening toward the dogs and he didn’t want the dogs to get hurt. So he blocked the ball from hitting the dogs, and it landed on the ground and eventually ended up as a trophy in Renegade’s mouth!

“Lindor hits the home run. I see it coming and I guess my dad instincts took over. It was literally going right for the dogs. I don’t need them taking a 110 mile an hour baseball in the stomach. So, I reached over my girlfriend, it hit off my finger, hit off the seat and landed on the ground. We’re scrambling for it. I came up with it and I gave it to the dog.”

Whatever, I’m sure Renegade would’ve caught it mid-air! Here’s Renegade bringing some much-needed adorableness to a baseball game:

And here’s Renegade with his prize:

You know, cute shit like this makes me want to actually go to a baseball game, but I don’t want to sit in the stands. I want to sit on the field with my chair facing the stands so I can get clear views of hot dog straws and dogs “catching” home run balls.
