Fraidy Cats!

In the 1990s, Milton Bradley decided to capitalize on the legendary war between cats and dogs by putting out a board game that pit dogs up against cats. And while it may look like Milton Bradley was secretly siding with cats by naming the entire game after them, Milton Bradley also pushed the hurtful stereotype that cats are scared bitches. So, Milton Bradley kept it bipartisan, pretty much.

Fraidy Cats came out in 1994, and it was a simple “roll and move” type board game. The way it worked is that every player was a Fraidy Cat and their goal was to move their cat around the fence and get back to the doghouse without getting bopped by the mean ole’ dog who wanted to take them down. As you made your way around the fence, the dog would sometimes “come alive” and charge at cat game pieces, sending that pussy flying back to the start space. This is how GeekyHobbies explains it:

To activate the dog, you press the button on its collar. The dog moves around the gameboard. While moving, the dog may run into the launcher of one or more of the cats which might launch those cats into the air. Players wait until the dog stops moving. If any player’s cat was flung into the air, the cat is put back into it’s launcher and is moved back to the nearest unoccupied barrel. If more than one cat is launched, the cat that was launched first moves to the nearest barrel followed by the other cat(s) being moved to the next closest barrel in the order that they were launched. If there are no unoccupied barrels behind the cat’s position, the cat is moved behind the doghouse and starts their next turn from the start space.

Here’s Fraidy Cats in action:

I didn’t remember that I played that game with my little cousins until now. It was THAT riveting and memorable. But I don’t need to play that game anymore since I already play a little game called Fraidy Human, which involves me sitting next to my sister’s cat until that cat swats me for doing something that annoys her (read: breathing, blinking, existing in her presence, etc…).
