Besides, this is not a laughing matter. Above is today’s HSOTD, a raccoon mom who was just trying to get to her babies in someone’s attic when she got stuck in the roof and now her ass is splayed out all over the place including trash sites like this one! But don’t worry, the raccoon mom was saved.
Newsweek has pointed me toward a Facebook post from Santa Cruz Animal Shelter and it tells the dramatic tale of the raccoon who got stuck in someone’s roof and was in danger of meeting Jesus. The post says that the Wildlife Emergency Services got a call from a citizen who said that a raccoon found herself trapped in their roof while trying to get to her babies who were inside. It became a MAN DOWN CODE 10 situation because the raccoon was in danger of suffocating, so the WES guided the homeowner on how to free the trapped raccoon from her roof shingles prison. Luckily, the raccoon was freed and reunited with her babies.
And luckily this mama racoon survived!
Our friends at Wildlife Emergency Services received a call earlier today from a concerned citizen in the Santa Cruz Mountains regarding a racoon that had chewed through their roof and had gotten herself stuck. Knowing that time was critical, they instructed the citizen how to push the racoon through the hole so it wouldn’t suffocate.
Now that the mama racoon is back safe with her babies, Wildlife Emergency Services will help the citizens to set up a repellant barrier to safely and humanely have mama and her kids move along to a more appropriate home.

Newsweek spoke to the CEO of WES, Rebecca Dmytryk, and she didn’t explain why they decided to let Santa Cruz Animal Shelter post that raccoon’s racculo for all the world to see, but she did explain what happened.
Rebecca Dmytryk, the founder and CEO of Wildlife Emergency Services, told Newsweek it is not common for raccoons to try to dig or chew through roofs.
She explained that the homeowner recently had repairs completed, and an attic vent containing the raccoon babies was closed off when the mother raccoon was away from them.
“This is her trying to get back to her babies,” Dmytryk said.
She told the homeowner it was imperative to act quickly to remove the raccoon before it died from overexerting itself from trying to get to the babies or from heat stress.
The homeowner removed the vents and, with the help of some nearby construction workers, opened up the hole.
“Within probably 30 minutes of me talking with her, she had the hole open and the raccoon had dropped in,” Dmytryk said.
Rebecca added that the homeowner has agreed to let the raccoon mom and her babies rest in their attic for a bit and then the WES will help them move the raccoons to a new home using repellants. So there is a happy ending to this drama, and I salute this raccoon mom because she has given me the perfect image to show someone when they ask me how my Monday is going.
