Pocket Flix!

Pocket Flix may sound like a hidden camera that a creeper would position behind a hole in their pocket so they can record upskirts on the shush, but as reader Linda, who recommended this for an HSOTD, points out, it was a highly-technologically-advanced little clip viewer. It was basically like a portable YouTube.

I looked far and wide throughout the internet (read: a 5-second search on YouTube and DailyMotion) for a Pocket Flix commercial or a clip, and came up empty. If only I had a Pocket Flix to watch a clip about Pocket Flix on! The site Memory Alpha says that the Pocket Flix was a next-level View-Master because the images it showed you actually moved. Pocket Flix was produced by the now-dead toy company, Ideal Toys, and made its debut in 1978. It was like the Fisher-Price Movie Viewer (which also came out in the 1970s). You used it to play Pocket Flix-brand cartridges that showed clips of TV shows and movies.

Pocket Flix was a battery-operated handheld motorized movie viewer produced by Ideal Toys in 1978. The unit allowed you to view interchangable circular movie “cassettes” and see clips from your favorite TV shows, cartoons and movies. The unit was sold with various “starter” cassettes, including a Star Trek cassette with footage from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “By Any Other Name”. The cartridge was also available separately.

As for the quality, it was the 1970s and the Pocket Flix was battery-operated, so I’m sure each clip was OLED-levels of crystal clear! At least to the kids in the 1970s it was. The Pocket Flix was a little before my time, which is shitty. Because it looked like the perfect toy for an introvert and I could’ve used it during recess time at school. The brats and bullies may not have bothered me if I was too busy watching TV clips on my extremely futuristic Pocket Flix! Or they would’ve slapped me in the head and then stolen my Pocket Flix from me. Probably that one.
