Open Post: Hosted By “Riverdale” Ending After 7 Seasons

Today The CW announced that Riverdale will end with its seventh season, which will air in early 2023. That explains that sudden breeze I just felt; it’s Lili Reinhart’s agent and manager breathing a giant sigh of relief. The 25-year-old actress, who once compared filming the show to being in prison, was one renewal away from going full Constance Wu.

The show, *loosely* based on the comic books and created by Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, was a big hit for The CW when it debuted back in 2017. When it was added to Netflix, the second season ratings jumped by 30%. But, over the last few years, Riverdale viewership has decreased. Season 6, which is currently airing Sunday nights, is averaging just under a half-million viewers per episode. That probably factored into the CW’s decision to end the show, via The Hollywood Reporter:

“I’m a big believer in giving series that have long runs an appropriate sendoff,” The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz told reporters Thursday. “We want to make sure it goes out the right way.”

Pedowitz added that he and Aguirre-Sacasa had a conversation Wednesday, and the show’s producers agreed that ending after seven seasons felt right.

Listen. I was committed to Riverdale. I hung on a helluva lot longer than most viewers. I was there for the entire Black Hood saga, the gang wars, Betty thinking she’s a psychopath, Archie’s murder trial, the Gargoyle King, the musical episodes, the multiple Chick Coopers, “jingle jangle”, Chad Michael Murray running an organ harvesting cult, Chad Michael Murray attempting to fly away in a rocket he built himself, Chad Michael Murray getting killed by Mädchen Amick, the snuff films, the Skull & Bone society, Veronica’s speakeasy, Archie’s vigilante group, Cheryl exhuming her brother’s corpse, and Jughead faking his own death. Hell, I even stuck around for the seven-year time jump after the kids graduated.

And then, I take a wee break and fall a mere 16 episodes behind. Suddenly, Archie and Betty are together, there are witches, alternate universes, time travel, superpowers, and some new murderer called TBK (the Trash Bag Killer)??? Dare I say... Riverdale has finally jumped the shark? I’m curious to see what the CW chairman means when he says he wants it to go out “the right way.” Voodoo? Sharknados? Making Ms. Grundy hot but also a sexual predator and then murdering her off? Oh wait, they already did that last one…
