Joya, the ballerina chihuahua!

Rudolf Nureyev. Margot Fonteyn. Mikhail Baryshnikov. Vaslav Nijinsky. George Balanchine. Anna Pavlova. Those are the names of the most legendary ballet dancers of all time and now you can add JOYA to that list. Because at the Crufts international dog show, Joya gracefully pirouetted into the hearts of everyone when she and her human handler delivered a performance of Swan Lake for the ages. “FINALLY, an artiste captured the true essence of my work,” said Tchaikovsky while looking on from beyond the grave.

WalesOnline says that the Crufts international dog show happened over the weekend at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham in England. This year, audience members probably said to themselves, “I must be in the wrong place because I don’t remember buying tickets to see The Royal Ballet,” when Joya and her human Karin Bauman of Switzerland elegantly leaped into the spotlight to perform their now-legendary rendition of Swan Lake during the Heelwork To Music competition. Karin decided to go more traditional with her costume by wearing a swan-lake ensemble, but Joya, being the free-thinking artiste that she is, decided to go minimalist by performing naked. A bold and provocative choice.

While Karin danced around, Joya put the JOY in Joya by joining her. Here are some of the highlights of that beautiful performance:

In case you can’t see the whole video, here’s a shot from the awww-inducing grand finale:

And just like that, I’m also on the floor over the adorable artistry of it all! But WalesOnline says that even though Joya gave the performance of the entire competition (and yes, I can say that with 100% authority even though Joya’s performance is the only one I’ve watched!), she didn’t win a thing.

Sadly, despite the beauty of the routine the dog did not win a single medal. She’s clearly not appreciated in her own time. Sigh. Unbelievably, it isn’t even the first time Swan Lake has been attempted by a dog. The routine was performed by a Border Collie in 2016. The Crufts Dog Show was broadcast live on Channel 4 from the NEC in Birmingham.

It makes sense that the judges didn’t give Joya a medal. How can you slap a simple medal onto such an exquisitely constructed work of priceless artistry? You can’t! The only thing you can do is throw roses at Prima Ballerina Joya’s talented paws before getting on your knees and thanking God that you witnessed such talent!

Now I leave you with Joya and Karin’s full performance of Chihuahua Lake from another competition last year:
