P.J. Hogan, who directed 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, says in a new book that they brought in Russell Crowe to read for the male lead, which eventually went to Dermot Mulroney. Julia Roberts, who had co-star approval, read with Russell, and P.J. says it was one of the “worst table reads” he’s ever been a part of and Russell wouldn’t even look at Julia once. Julia tried to get Russell to make eye contact with her but his eyes stayed on the page. Russell probably botched that audition on purpose and it’s a good thing for producers that he did. I mean, Julia Roberts AND Russell Crowe on the same set? It would’ve been hard for crew members to do their job as their ears burn and burst from those two yelling at each other. It would’ve ended with Julia demanding that they make a few changes like her character brutally killing Russell’s character in the first scene.
