Screaming Yellow Zonkers!

There’s a very good reason why Screaming Yellow Zonkers sounds like it was named by someone who just hit the peak of their LSD trip. It came from the 1960s and 70s! “Look at those screaming yellow zonkers!” is definitely something a tripped-out trick would scream while watching the popcorn pop. So it was the perfect name for a popcorn snack in 1969.

At the very end of the 1960s in 1969, The Lincoln Snack Food Company, which also produced Poppycock and Fiddle Faddle, started selling Screaming Yellow Zonkers. It was basically butter toffee popcorn, and Tacquitos.net says that it was so glazed that it was like the star of a sugar bukakke party:

This is very good sugar-coated popcorn. It’s very tasty. Most of the adjectives in the name are true: crunchy and yellow.

I would not, however, say that it’s lightly glazed, as it is very generously glazed, so there’s plenty of sweet taste. Good stuff.

YSZ wasn’t just a box of sugary tooth-destroyers, it was also known for bringing loads of forward DEEZINE and HIGH ART! The Lincoln Snack Food Company claimed that SYZ was the first food product to come in a black box. And over the years, they invited artists to do their own version of the box. Airbrush artist Charlie White’s version was hung in the Louvre. Orville Redenbacher could never.

When Conagra bought Lincoln Snacks in 2007, they dumped Screaming Yellow Zonkers. But they brought it back for a minute in 2012. Okay, until not too long ago, I had gone through life not knowing that Screaming Yellow Zonkers existed. But yet they were around in the 80s, 90s, and early-aughts?! How did I miss them? Oh, how I want to take a time machine back to the 80s, so I can look through our grocery store for this and sneak it into my mom’s cart…. just so she can spot it, pull it out, and tell me to go get myself a damn apple instead.
