TOMY’s Drive Yourself Crazy Game!

Kids today who get their driving kicks from Grand Theft Auto would never be able to handle the heat attack-inducing THRILLS of Drive Yourself Crazy, a handheld game from the 70s. Sure, Drive Yourself Crazy didn’t have hookers walking around like a constipated duck on downers as GTA did, but you had to use one hand to hold onto your chair for dear life as the little car in Drive Yourself Crazy zoom zoomed down the paper streets. It was that riveting! Obviously, when Britney Spears sang You Drive Me Crazy, she was talking about this game.

Drive Yourself Crazy was a handheld game that TOMY put out in 1976. You used a tiny little steering wheel to steer a little plastic car and your goal was to keep the car from crashing. Hand Held Museum explains it like this:

Very early racing game by Tomy. And to be honest, pretty stupid. 🙂 It’s basically a sheet of paper with a street drawn on it, that is rolled up like a scroll. You start the game, and have to keep the car on the road, if you crash, the number located on the item you crashed into represents your score. It’s all honor system, there are no sensors in the game to indicate a crash, just a motor that turns the paper.

That sound. It is haunting my brains once again. That sound is so annoying that it could cause an actual car crash. Shit, I bet that in the 1970s, over 75% of car accidents were caused by parents losing their minds and control of the wheel from their kids playing Drive Yourself Crazy in the backseat.
