The Gay Couple Spirits of Doritos Mexico’s Día de los Muertos ad!

If Pixar has any plans to do a sequel to Coco, can they please devote it to the gay spirit uncles of Doritos’ Día de los Muertos ad?! Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead in English) takes place November 1 and November 2, and in honor of the holiday, Doritos Mexico did an ad where relatives visit the altar of their loved one. He pops up and introduces them to his afterlife partner, another spirit man. Yeah, so you hear that hos who can’t get a man while alive? There’s hope for you! You may be able to get a man in the afterworld!

In the commercial, a family walks toward an altar and the abuelita puts down a bowl of Doritos in front of a picture of a man, and says, “Dearest brother, I miss you so much.” That’s when blue smoke appears (“Would glittery rainbow smoke be too much?” is definitely something a Doritos exec asked) and out pops Uncle Alberto killing the already-dead hos with his hands on hip pose. The family gasps and after Uncle Alberto greets everyone, a man appears behind him. After Uncle Alberto’s family asks who the man is, he introduces the man as his partner Mario before they hold hands. To which, Uncle Alberto’s sister basically says, “Thank GOD, I thought your ass was going to be FOREVER alone even in the afterlife.” Then Tio Alberto and Tio Mario hug as their family walks toward them. The end title reads: “It’s never late to be who you are.

Here’s the sweet ad that probably made other corporations everywhere look at their calendars and say, “Wait, I thought we only pandered to the gay community in June?!?

Many felt warmness in their hearts and wetness in their eyes over this ad, but some felt that Doritos fucked up the message by telling queer people that we can come out when we’re dead.

Doritos Mexico said this in a statement to The Advocate about their ad, which I’m sure will piss off Un Millón de Mamás:

“In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a celebration of life. It’s a moment to share our respect, love, and unity for all the people we cherish, even if they are gone. And it’s an opportunity for Doritos Mexico to celebrate love and our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community every day. With the commercial ‘It’s never late to be who you are,’ we want to say that it’s never too late to share your true self, and when you are ready, we will support you.”

I will admit that the ad even made my frostbitten turd of a heart feel something, but I’ll also say that I’m surprised that when Uncle Alberto’s sister put down that bowl of Doritos, he didn’t appear and say, “Really, I’m dead and you brought me Doritos?! And not even the whole bag? Cheap ass!
