Matthew Star from The Powers of Matthew Star!

You may be looking at that picture and thinking to yourself, “Michael, why did a post a picture of John Travolta in his Prince of Scientology drag in an HSOTD post??” But excuse you, that piece of intergalactic hotness (who is working a whisper of a camel toe) is Matthew Star, the alien prince of the 80s flop TV show The Powers of Matthew Star!

Since today is Emmys day, I thought I’d pay tribute to a TV show from the past that deserved all the Emmys and by “all the Emmys,” I mean whatever the TV equivalent of a Razzie was. The Powers of Matthew Star was a sci-fi television series that ran for just one season on NBC from 1982 to 1983. It starred Peter Barton (best known now as Scott Grainger from Young and the Restless) as the title role of Matthew Star, a high school student who was actually an alien prince. Tom Cruise tested for the title role but didn’t get it. The joke was on the casting tricks because Tom Cruise went on to become an alien king of Scientology (just call him Matthew Dirt Star). The show also starred Louis Gossett, Jr. as Matthew Star’s guardian and Amy Steel as his girlfriend. The show’s first several episodes followed Matthew’s life as a regular high school boy who had to dodge intergalactic assassins sent by the enemies of his home planet. But halfway into the first season, they switched shit up. Matthew was no longer in high school and was instead, fighting evil for the government.

Here’s the original intro of The Powers of Matthew Star where Louis Gossett, Jr. tells us about their home planet of Quadris:

The Powers of Matthew Star was shit-canned after just one season, but episodes of it can currently be seen on MeTV. It has made it on lists of the worst TV shows ever and some have compared it to Small Wonder and Out of This World. I don’t know if it should be compared to those iconic masterpieces, but it still is an important piece of TV art thanks to that crotch-suffocating sperm-fish-looking leotard alone.
