The Geico Gecko has been the star of Geico commercials since 1999 and he’s one of its most famous faces. But that dapper trick isn’t the only breakout star of Geico commercials. In the early aughts, a Geico commercial gave us Bob Wehadababyitsaboy, which probably made some ask, “Ugh, is that German or something?” But believe it or not, that’s not Bob’s born name. Bob was just pulling the oldest cheap trick in the book of cheap tricks!

Since I am a child of the 80s and 90s, I know all too well about payphones and collect calls. Spoiled brats nowadays will never understand the struggle we went through from breathing in all kinds of disgusting diseases as we used a payphone to try to trick the collect call feature into letting our mom know to pick us up. Since I grew up in the dark ages when we didn’t have cell phones, I would use a payphone to call my mom to pick me up from the mall. I’d call collect and when the automated message asked for my name, I’d say something like, “It’s Michael ImOutsideOfSears,” which strangely enough, is easier for English speakers to say than my real last name. Geico let everyone know that trick in a commercial that first aired in 2000.

In the commercial, Bob is at the hospital after his wife had a baby, and his cheap ass doesn’t want to pay to call his parents, so he pulls the collect call trick instead. The commercial goes like this:

Bob: Operator, I’d like to make a collect call, please. First name Bob, last name is… Wehadababyitsaboy.

Father: Hello?

Operator: Collect call from Mr. Bob Wehadababyitsaboy.

Father: Sorry. It’s the wrong number. (hangs up)

Mother: Who’s that, dear?

Father: Bob. TheyhadaBabyitsaboy.

Mother: Ahhh!

Then the commercial narrator lets us know that we don’t have to save money by cheating the phone company. We can save money by going with Geico.

I also love how Bob’s parents don’t give a shit that they’re grandparents. There’s obviously some tension and a backstory there. I bet that in the sequel, Bob collect-calls back and says his name is, “Bob DontTryToVisitWeStillHateYou.” But really, those were the days when gender reveals didn’t lead to death and destruction. It just led to an operator getting annoyed.
