Big Yellow Teapot House!
Bluebird Toys was a British toy company that was most famous for bringing the world Polly Pocket. But before they made Tom Cruise’s taller sister, they made Big Yellow Teapot House, which was a Fisher-Price playset-type toy that changed the dollhouse game forever!
Reader Anne dropped Big Yellow Teapot into my inbox as an HSOTD option, and the big brown turd I call my brain immediately pooted out question marks. I did not recognize it, but that’s probably because it was mostly a hit in the UK. Big Yellow Teapot House was a gigantic ass teapot that opened up to reveal a little house inside. Wikipedia says that it came out in 1980 and was one of the first toy houses to break “away from the traditional architectural style of dolls’ houses.” EightiesKids says that Big Yellow Teapot House also came with some little figurines:
Resembling a traditional teapot, the toy can be opened up to reveal a living space with wallpaper and furniture. In the other half of the teapot is a bedroom and an access point for a car.
Populating the teapot are several miniature figures, including a dog and two blonde-haired children. These are stored in the top of the teapot, which can be lifted up.
Bluebird and the Teapot were conceived by Sir Torquil Patrick Alexander Norman, a 6’7″ nobleman who was also a pilot and investment banker.
The Teapot was one of the first ‘container houses’, eschewing the typical dollhouse architecture in favour of a more whimsical design. It would later be joined in the company’s ‘Big’ range by the Big Red Fun Bus and Big Jumbo Fun Plane.
Big Yellow Teapot House came from the mind of Bluebird’s founder, Sir Torquil Patrick Alexander Norman, and its success led to the toy company creating other “Big” toys like Big Red Fun Bus and Big Jumbo Fun Plane. And Bluebird was not lying when they called their Yellow Teapot House “Big.” It was huge!
I can only imagine the scream that a parent let out after walking into their kid’s room and finding an absolutely wet mess from their child trying to make tea in Big Yellow Teapot House by pouring a bunch of water and teabags in it. They’re probably still screaming.
And Kevin Hart recently added to his huge Calabasas compound by buying the house next door for $7 million. Kevin is wasting his money when all he has to do is go on eBay and buy a Big Yellow Teapot House for like $40 and move into it. It has more than enough room for him and then some!
