In the 90s, some higher-up at Clairol obviously hated Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s classic (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, because it was used to death in commercials for Natural Instincts hair dye. As Carole King’s bank accounts got bigger and stronger from all that Clairol money, our nerves got weaker and weaker from those Natural Instincts commercials getting on them all the time. And not only did Clairol’s Natural Instincts commercial ruin (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, it ruined the name Steven too. Because if you watched a lot of TV in the 90s, then you can’t read the name Steven without hearing a pre-famous Debra Messing shout it out.

Clairol’s Natural Instincts came out in the 90s and it was marketed as a more “natural” hair dye since it was filled with a bunch of “naturally derived ingredients” instead of straight-up chemicals. So to push the naturalness of Natural Instincts, Clairol used (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman as its jingle. In this commercial from 1995, Debra Messing gingers up her hair with some Natural Instincts while screeching along to Queen Aretha singing A Natural Woman. After drying her newly dyed ginger mane, Debra tempts a lawsuit from Tommy Cruise by busting out some Risky Business moves. And Debra is so caught up with disrespecting Aretha with her eardrum-ruining voice that she doesn’t realize Steven is watching her. And when she finally does, she screams out “STEVEN!” in embarrassment. From this moment on, the name Steven would never be the same again!

Clairol may or may not have had a warning on boxes of Natural Instincts that read: May Cause You To Get Caught Singing Natural Woman By A Dude. Because in this Natural Instincts commercial from 1997, another woman gets caught yodeling by her hot neighbor while waiting for the elevator.

“Woman With Dyed Hair Getting Caught Singing ‘Natural Woman’ By A Man” was definitely the “Woman Laughing Alone With Salad“ of the 90s.

You know, Debra Messing is regularly called “the Will & Grace actress,” but she shouldn’t be called that. She should forever be called “the Natural Instincts actress” because this is her greatest work. And as for the actor who played STEVEN!, my guess is that he retired from acting and joined a silent monastery. Not because he’s religious or anything, but because he knew that in that silent monastery, he’d probably never have to hear the name STEVEN! again.
