Open Post: Hosted By John Cameron Mitchell As Joe Exotic

Last March, right at the beginning of this cursed pandemic, everybody and their mother was, like, totally obsessed with Netflix’s Tiger King. Even though it featured tales of ghastly animal abuse. Hey, we were hard up! More than fifteen months later, NBC is shooting their adaptation of the docuseries in Australia. This is the TV series that stars John Cameron Mitchell as Joe Exotic, Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin, Kyle MacLachlan as her husband Howard Baskin (not the dead one, the alive one), and Dean Winters as Jeff Lowe. And now Page Six has on-set pics of John in full Joe Exotic drag, smooching an unnamed male character in front of a pet shop. There doesn’t appear to be any meth in the scene they’re filming, but it’s safe to assume it’s there.

Here are the pics:

Hmmm, the front part of the wig is giving me Mad TV’s Stuart. Also, why does this shit look like a musical? Is it a musical? I sure hope so. I mean, they cast the guy from Hedwig and the Angry Inch might as well take advantage of his talents.

58-year-old John previously told Page Six he understands the Tiger King character, pointing out that he and Joe were born six weeks apart and have lived in a lot of the same places. John says he gets why Joe is the way he is, explaining that growing up queer in those kinds of hateful environments can turn a person into “more of a fucking asshole” than the people oppressing them.

There are a few other Tiger King projects that may or may not be in the works, but it looks like the NBC series has beaten them all to the punch. Last year Rob Lowe suggested that he and Ryan Murphy were planning something, Nicolas Cage was cast as Joe in a series for Amazon, and Tara Reid has said she wants to play Carole Baskin in a film version. Tara’s dream Joe Exotic would be Matthew McConaughey. To which I say: Awww, sweetie. But let’s be real, I would actually watch the fuck outta that.
