Harley, the fawn savior!

That sound of punches you hear is from execs at Disney and DreamWorks tussling over the movie rights to this soul-warming little story about a dog who saved a fawn from drowning. Okay, honestly, I hope Disney wins that movie rights fight because although Bambi came out in 1942, it’s still not too late for them to redo THAT ONE traumatizing scene and make it so that Bambi’s mother is saved by Harley who recently kept a fawn from meeting Jesus!

Ralph Dorn tells People that on June 2, his 6-year-old Goldendoodle, Harley, was nowhere to be seen. Ralph went off to look for Harley and found the pooch swimming in the lake and with Harley was a baby deer. Ralph believes that Harley was saving the fawn from drowning. Harley swam beside the fawn and when they got to shore, Ralph lifted the fawn to safety. Harley didn’t want to leave the baby deer and comforted the fawn with licks. The fawn’s mom showed up and Ralph knew that was his and Harley’s cue to go back home. Once they were gone, the mama deer and her baby deer walked off. But that wasn’t the end of Harley and Bambi Jr.’s story.

Harley must have spent the night, staring out the window and cooing, “Somewhere out there…”, to the fawn he saved, because Ralph says that he was very uneasy the next day. When Ralph let Harley out of the house, he ran off and found the fawn. They had another lovely moment before the fawn and their mom went off again. That was the last time Harley saw them.

And here are the pictures that Ralph took of Harley and the fawn:

Ralph wasn’t that shocked to see Harley becoming a Captain Save-A-Ho to a fawn-in-need, because he’s always been a do-gooding angel:

Harley’s heartwarming actions are not a surprise to the retired Marine Corps pilot. “We could tell right away, even as a puppy, he had such a good heart,” says Dorn. “He has always been like that with children and animals. He loves them all.”

Harley has worked as a certified therapy dog, visiting the elderly in care facilities and sitting with children during reading hours at the local library. He’s also a hit with Dorn’s four grandchildren.

“He’s 100 percent glued to them,” says Dorn. Harley is even cuddly best friends with the family cat, Zsu Zsu.

I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard about the beautiful friendship between Harley and the fawn. In about 5 years, Pepaw Harley will be sitting in his rocking chair on the porch when the grown-up fawn will appear with their babies and they’ll each throw loving looks at one another before Harley barks, “Now get off my lawn, fawn!
