“Dolittle” And “365 Days” Got The Most Razzie Nominations This Year

Robert Downey Jr. might want to practice holding that pose in the mirror because there’s a very good chance he could very well be soon balancing a Golden Raspberry Award in that same hand. RDJ just landed himself a Worst Actor and a Worst Onscreen Combo nomination for this year’s Razzie Awards, as well as a Worst Picture nomination for the 2020 talking CGI animal dud Dolittle. And these are RDJ’s first Razzie nominations ever. Congratulations, I guess??

The Golden Raspberry Awards, aka the Razzies, released their 2021 nominations earlier today, and let me just cut straight to the point and kill the suspense, yes, Music was nominated several times. The Razzies traditionally happen the night before the Academy Awards and celebrate what they believe is the worst in cinema from the previous year. They’re also usually announced right before the Oscar nominations come out (and those will, finally, be announced on Monday).

There are a couple of nominations that are fully deserving, and some that feel like a blatant disregard to the art of cinema. I know some people think awards shows are rigged but I’m starting to think the Razzies might not be as credible and legitimate of an organization as they claim. For starters, Adam Sandler – arguably the Cecil B. DeMille of the Razzies at this point – was nominated for Worst Actor for Hubie Halloween, a cinematic achievement that gave us both the return of Ben Stiller’s asshole nurse character from Happy Gilmore, and June Squibb in a bunch of gross t-shirts. Come on, this is practically Sandler’s Citizen Kane, be reasonable.

And then there are multiple nominations for the Barbie & Kendra series, a film series about two bimbos who do whatever it is they’re doing here:

Joining RDJ and Adam Sandler in the Worst Actor category is frequent Sandler collaborator David Spade, for his Netflix offering The Wrong Missy. And rounding out the group is Michele Morrone, from the messed-up sex trafficking softcore porn, 365 Days, as well as a nom for the My Pillow Guy. Worst Actress actually has one Oscar nominee (Kate Hudson, for Music), and an Oscar winner (Anne Hathaway for The Last Thing He Wanted), as well as two-time Razzie winner Katie Holmes (for Brahms: The Boy II). Joining them is Anna-Marie Sieklucka for 365 Days, and Lauren Lapkus for The Wrong Missy.

Worst pictures include the aforementioned 365 Days, Absolute Proof (aka that right-wing doc that tries to argue Donald Trump won the election), Dolittle (which currently holds 14% on Rotten Tomatoes), Fantasy Island (a low-budget horror film that is related to the 1970s TV show), and Music. This is going to end in a five-way tie, isn’t it?

The most surprising nomination of all is Rudy Giuliani, who got two nominations: Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo for Borat 2. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I hope he doesn’t win and accept his award in person because anything he says will come straight out of his ass and we don’t need another image of him reaching into his pants to grab his “speech.”
