Parents of children of the 80s definitely looked at Kim Kardashian gushing over North West’s paint-by-number skills and said, “Cute, but it’s got nothing on the artistic masterpieces that my child twirled up!” Because in the 1980s, children made the value of a Pollock original plummet by making their own artistic splatter masterpieces thanks to Twirl O Paint!
Twirl O Paint actually debuted in the 1960s, but it stuck around through the 70s and 80s. The way it worked was that you’d put a piece of paper on it and hit the button, which caused the paper to spin like my head after the edible really hits. Then as the paper spun, you’d squirt paint onto it, and the spirits of Monet, Picasso, and Von Gogh would gasp at the artistic brilliance of it all! Here’s a Twirl O Paint commercial from the 80s:
I remember wanting a Twirl O Paint as a child and never getting one. I’m surprised I didn’t make my own using a Lazy Susan and old housepaint found in the gargage. But it’s actually a good thing my mom didn’t get me a Twirl O Paint, because that shit makes me dizzy and I’d probably barf all over the paper. Although, if I did that, my art would probably sell for thousands and I’d become an artistic child prodigy! Now if you’ll excuse me I have to add “not allowing me to fulfill my destiny as a provocative barf artiste by getting me a Twirl O Paint” on the list of things to blame my mom for!!!!!!!!!!!
