Teyana Taylor Clarified Her “Retirement” From Music Announcement

Teyana Taylor recently griped online about her music career. But this wasn’t like when The Weeknd wasn’t kissed on the forehead by the Recording Academy and nominated for a Grammy–even though they don’t matter anymore. Teyana got angry over her record label Def Jam, which she’s been with for almost a decade, not supporting her music. I mean, Iggy Azalea really blossomed post record label so maybe Teyana trolled Def Jam hard enough to get booted.

Teyana Taylor has some real bops. If you don’t know her hit track WTP (work that pussy) then blame Def Jam for not promoting it enough. MadameNoire says that last week, Teyana showed off her end-of-the-year Spotify streaming numbers on Instagram, and in that post, she announced her retirement, saying that she was “retiring this chapter of my story” because she feels underappreciated by the “machine.”

When Teyana started to trend on Twitter over her retirement, she did an Instagram Live to clarify what she meant:

“I think my core fans got mad before understanding what I was saying.”

Teyana explained that she feels underappreciated by her label’s lack of caring about her music:

“I am going to feel underappreciated if I am putting in 110% and my label is reciprocating 10% of that. I constantly feel alone. I constantly feel unappreciated. I constantly feel failed… because there’s literally no push… The crazy thing about it is I’ve asked Def Jam to drop me on almost 10 different occasions.”

And Teyana isn’t planning on making new music anytime soon since the process is mentally and emotionally draining for her:

“I think it’s a tiny bit selfish to say “what about your fans? Do it for your fans.” I have to do it for my mental health. I have to do it for my emotional health. I have to do it for my kids so I can stay alive.”

Teyana responded to people giving her support online, including Cardi B:

Teyana has called out her label before. When there was a rumor her husband Iman Shumpert got a pornstar pregnant in a threesome with the couple, Teyana hit up Twitter to say she was actually just mad at her label. If an alleged side-baby pisses you off less than your label, that’s a sign.
