Open Post: Hosted By This Sea Lion Barking Contest

Sea lions. Fascinating creatures. Are they walruses? Seals? Somewhere in between? Whatever they are, mammalogists at Long Beach, California’s Aquarium of the Pacific claim they’re the loudest animals they work with. They showcased their sea lions’ deafening barks on the aquarium’s TikTok page.

It’s a blessing that sea lions (probably) can’t spread COVID, because if they could, we’d all be infected from just watching this video:

Cain’s bark sounds like a chair being dragged across a hardwood floor. He is awarded 8/10. Hefty Parker’s bark is more like someone learning to blow the shofar. He only gets 7/10, and I personally give him a 2 for dental hygiene. Then we meet Harpo, who is the clear winner here. The slippery fella didn’t even let the mammalogist finish her sentence before he went full-on Laura Palmer. 9/10.

In the end, all three sea lions blend their beautiful voices together to produce music that’s still an improvement over any of the heavy metal shows I’ve been dragged to by the men in my life.
